"I understand the procedures of UW-Madison's admissions process and that waitlisted students can do nothing to improve their chances towards admission. However, I would like to express my continued interest in attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I realize that the chances of postponed students eventually being admitted are slim to none, and I intend to accept admission to another school before May 1st.

Despite this, UW-Madison is still my #1 choice. I do not plan to wait by my mailbox with bated breath for the next month, but at the same time I would gladly accept an invitation to Madison regardless of whether or not I send a deposit to another university. I hope to hear from you in the coming weeks, but if not I would still like to thank the UW-Madison admissions office for taking the time to review my application.

Sincerely,

There's a few things I have to say about this.

1.) You sent it via email - not as formal as a proper letter. A proper letter shows more dedication.

2.) You did not express exactly why UW-Madison is your first choice. You only stated that it is - that is not enough.

3.) You did not give a reason for them to consider your application over others, and you did not show enough personal connection.

I'd suggest writing another letter that's much more persuasive and sending it to them. Be specific. You made a request but have absolutely nothing to back it up.

this is a really polite email and im sure they would appreciate it, but...its not going to do a whole lot to get you in

Thanks. It'll be a few weeks before they get a good idea of whether or not to accept students from the waitlist (and if so how many) so I still have time to make a more personal letter and send it through the mail.
