i hate people in cars that do not stop for pedestrians and just blow smoke into your face.... whos with me?

Motorists are not obligated to stop for you and give you a ride. Blowing smoke in your face is rude though, but taht can be remedied by moving away.

That’s one of the perks of going to college in the Midwest: every car stops and waits for you to cross. Literally EVERY car. It’s a little scary sometimes. :)

ur so spoiled… stupid hippies in ucsc

Bedouin, I think merman was talking about drivers who don’t stop to let pedestrians cross the road. I seriously doubt any college student would take the risk of hitchhiking, especially considering that it is illegal.

Merman, I’m sorry that people are so obnoxious. I’ve had that experience on other campuses, especially in the Northeast, but at my campus in SoCal it’s different. There are a heck of a lot more cars out here, but people are far more willing to stop and let you cross the street. What I find particularly annoying, however, are the students on bikes or especially skateboards who come careening around sharp corners, completely disregarding the fact that people might be walking around the other side. Some people text while biking or carry on conversations with people behind them so they have absolutely NO VIEW of where they’re going, usually resulting in a crash or a near miss. As the pedestrian on the receiving end, I can say those accidents are NOT fun.

At the same time, one of my big pet peeves is those who feel like they can walk whenever they feel like it. If I am trying to drive through campus and the road has 4 crosswalks in less than half-mile, USE THEM. Don’t just walk wherever you feel like whenever you feel like. It really ticks me off when people just cross the street without even looking up.

I shouldn’t have to stop every 10 feet so somebody can walk across the street.

@mflevity: Not all the Midwest. Chicago drivers are terrifying.

^ Lol…@mflevity: That’s true…gonna agree w/ u…especially in MN :] (everyone here is nice hahaha ).

Chicago is terrifying

mflevity, I beg to differ with your comment. Back at Purdue, people don’t stop for pedestrians even when they are supposed to yield. There are even articles out there of people getting hit from drivers while walking or biking across. Of course, the high % of Chicago drivers can be the reason to this though…

Hm I go to school in the South and every car stops for pedestrians, sometimes even if it’s a green for the car. Also, when kids walk absentmindedly in a traffic lane and a car is behind them, the car almost never honks and just passively crawls behind the kid for like 10 minutes.

DCH, that smiley continually reminds me of this.

I’ve been hit by two cars since starting college. Both times, the driver was texting and not looking at the road at all. Absolutely sick and tired of awful drivers…

Haha, fine. Exclude Chicaco from the “Midwest.” Wouldn’t be the first time.

I would imagine it’s a more urban vs. suburban thing.

whats chicaco? u mean chica chica co?

Yeah, Chicago already removed itself from Illinois.

@Karabee I can’t think of a witty Horatio Caine response to that

And yeah Chicago seems about as midwestern as San Francisco

I must say I noticed far more racial tension in Chicago than in the South.

In Ann Arbor, just walking into the street and pretending not to notice the cars is actually how you have to cross the street at some intersections, or else you won’t ever get to go. It was pretty hard to get used to! I started off just standing on the corner looking frightened until someone took pity on me and let me cross.

In most of the DC area I think you’re supposed to stop for pedestrians who want to cross at a crosswalk, nobody follows it though :(
