Just spent 2 weeks at Wash U

It was for a Summer Program, for Achitecture actually, and we basically lived there for a couple intense weeks while taking this course. If there's anything specific anyone wants to know, like dorms/city, you can ask here. We didn't really have classroom experience nor get a chance to explore the campus thouroughly though.

I just started to form my college list and I'm thinking about wash u as one of the reach universities in my list. though I have some concerns about it. I know that wash u would give me an awesome education but I heard that there are not so much to do (weekends and etc.). is it true? what would you say about surrounding and social life? by the way I'm an international student.

Yeah, and I wanted to ask about St. Louis, too.

I've been to some major cities, but mostly on the East Coast. If you could, say, compare it to another city, which would you pick?

Is it a pleasant city to be in? Is it particularly filthy, smoggy, etc.?

Just wondering.

St. Louis is a decent city; there's not much to do within a block of campus, but if you walk about ten to fifteen minutes you'll find the Delmar Loop, which has lots of eateries, shops, and entertainment. It's one of the more popular locations for WashU students to visit. Forest Park also has a free zoo and other museums, golf, running and bike trails. The WashU shuttle system is pretty convenient too; it provides access to lots of places you might need to go to (like grocery stores, mall, metro station, etc.). There are some other attractions, especially downtown St. Louis (which is a twenty minute metro ride away), but for the most part St. Louis is pretty nice.

Sorry for the delay >>

Yeah, basically what you have been told is true. St. Louis isn't built "for" the college student and it'll definitely seem that way at first. It's as if there's an invisible border between the campus and the rest of the city - nightlife didn't seem too pretty either. However as stated, the loop is very close, like 15 mins, so as long as you quickly find a group of friends who are willing to check the city out you will be fine for the weekends. It's just kinda lame and I too was disappointed.

It's absolutely not filthy or anything. The campus just feels kind of "contained" and nothing is exactly pulling you into the city. It's not nearly as "exciting" as all the East coast cities, such as the theaters and nightclubs. I'd compare it to Seattle (sorry ^_^), except it's flat, and there's no ocean.

Yea I forgot about all that stuff - the Zoo is great, you could spend all day there. Plus, Wash U is right next to that giant park so you can basically go running/biking every day. However I'd have to disagree with the shuttles being "convenient", in fact, transportation is a pain. Often they didn't come on time (maybe cause it was summer?) and sometimes felt like walking would be faster due to all the traffic (if you're going off campus).

Hey Cyrone-
My friend was there too. He is a senior who is like 5 ft tall, brown hair, a little chubby, really blue eyes, and looks way under 17. His initials are A.G.
