just starting to prepare for AP chem...pointless?

i am in AP chem, but my class is a complete joke and we have learned nothing. i have a barrons prep book and small group of people to study with. is it possible to prepare adequately (i want a 4 or 5) with the time that is left??? i dont want to completely waste my time....

Ummm… good luck with that. Unless you have a lot of time to commit to chem everyday, I honestly don’t think you’ll be prepared enough to get a 5. I don’t think barron’s alone will cut it. You need to supplement it with a textbook. And do lots and lots of practice FRQs. Unless you’re like a secret chem genius, I highly doubt 3 months will be enough. You’ll probably pass but I doubt the 5. (I’m assuming you need to relearn everything in 3 months)

It’s not pointless. Go through the prep book and see which areas you are iffy on. Then go relearn those topics.

The AP Chem test is relatively predictable and just make sure to study the important topics (acids, equilibrium, etc).

Good luck. Don’t listen to anagenesis. It’s not that hard if you’re dedicated enough and have a basic knowledge of chemistry.

The AP Chemistry exam is generally seen as extremely challenging. You would seriously have to devout a lot of time, daily, to achieve a 5. It’s definitely not pointless, and I would try to give it my best shot. However, I’ve heard that in AP Chem, the labs are pretty education in themselves, maybe try to dig those up and study from them? Barron’s is nice. Brush up on your AP Chemistry textbook, read it every night. I’m sure you could get anywhere from a 3-4, maybe with enough prep even a 5! good luck!

yea you have enough time. Just pound down the books. Classes are a waste of time (most of the time) unless you have a really good teacher.

Read your textbook and study guide. Also do the FRQ on ap central.

have you at least taken some sort of chem class before? If so, it definitely helps… I’m just 1/3 way through independent studying chem and I think it’s very manageable and doable! considering I ask my friends to take home the quizes and I score very well on them…

Just allocate your time wisely!!! if you need a self-study support person - I’m right there with you. :)

OP - your username = one of my favorite books :)

I believe an important part of being able to do this test is having prior chem knowledge. My school doesn’t offer AP Chem (only an honors chem 2 which I am enrolled in) and the knowledge of first-year chemistry is enough to make AP material mostly just extrapolation upon first-year material, so I’d definitely say go for it if you have this knowledge. You can get a 5 on any test with practice…some just take more than others.
