Just came back from a Williams tour and info. Just curious what other Williams hopefuls/students think of my chances....

No, it doesn’t depend on your essays. It depends on what Williams wants from you – athlete for a particular team, geographic distribution, etc. They “build” a class. I know kids with amazing amazing stats and ECs (better than yours), awesome writers (so I’m sure their essays were incredible) who got waitlisted or rejected.

While it is true that Williams’ admissions office is very careful about who they select, there is nothing to suggest that they will not find what they “want from you” in your essays or letters of recommendation. I myself am not an athlete, do not play an instrument, and am white and from the tri-state area (NJ-NY-PA; Williams already has a LOT of students from around here). I can only imagine that it was the content of my LoRs and my essay that did it for the adcom (I am a rising junior).

That being said, the most important part of your application will be whatever it is that sets you apart. Why should Williams admit YOU instead of that other guitar playing social activist guy/gal? And there will be others.

mandala, you’re right, too. I guess I find that any of these chance threads for a place like Williams or anyone who thinks they can offer the “key” to admissions is just offering false hope. Personally, I have just never seen anyone get into Williams unless they were a legacy or a recruited athlete. And, some of these kids who were waitlisted that I know of this year certainly would have had absolutely amazing LoRs too.

Thanks for the input. I have no false sense of being admitted because I have the best stats or because of what is said on these forums. As it was explained at an info session at one of the other top LAC’s…“there are 3,000 applicants we refuse every year, not because they are not qualified but because we don’t have enough room”. Its like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play!

you’re definitely competitive, good luck! If you’re good at guitar, you’ll want to make a CD and send in a music supplement, either of you playing or performing something you wrote yourself, whatever showcases your talents best.

You have a good chance, but apply ED, or have alternatives. My S with very similar stats to yours, plus 4.0 IB, plus pres student gov plus numerous awards for his school newspaper contributions(as in best in NYS) was rejected. He also ran XC. Show the love is my advise.
