Hey everyone, Im from New York and just got back from visiting OSU. I went on the admitted students tour as well as a tour of the engineering department. I wanted to make this thread to see if I could answer any questions for those who might not be able to visit. Also, I committed after I took the tour, so if anybody else is attending Autumn semester, Ill see you there!

Congratulations! I take it you have been admitted to the Engineering Department. Do you know which dorms you prefer?

Personally I prefer the dorms on the North Campus (NC). This is mainly because the Engineering Learning Community is in Houck House which is on the NC. Additionally, the NC is closer to the academic buildings which will be geared towards my major, so I won’t have to walk as far to classes each day. Not that it takes long to walk from one side of campus to the other. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from NC to SC.

Other than that, I actually like the layout of the West Residence Halls better than the North Residence Halls. By that I mean the layout of the actual dorms. That’s just my opinion though. There are dorm plans on the OSU residence hall website if you would like to see them. Also, I’m sure the view from the higher floors of those two towers is beautiful.

Thanks by the way! I was admitted to the engineering department. After seeing all the labs and hearing about the First Year Engineering program on that tour, I can’t wait to attend!

I was told there is a ton of construction around the Columbus area. Is it really that bad?

Hmm, not that I noticed. The only major construction I noticed on campus is there is a new bio molecular/chemical engineering building being built. That construction isn’t in the way of anything though. From what I was told, it will be finished in 2014. So, no, I don’t think there is a lot of construction going on. At least nothing noticeable.

I was also told the residence halls on north campus were going to be renovated next year. I don’t know anything else about that though.

If you were talking about the city as well, I didn’t notice much there either.

What exactly were you told?

Hi. We are from Boston and visiting for the first time next week. We are going to the “honor acceptance” day, April 5th. We originally planned to go on the April 22nd, since my son, like you, got accepted to the Engineering program, and they are offering a tour/info session that day. We really do not want to make two 11 hr drives, so was there anything you would recommend that is a ‘must see’, as far as the engineering department is concerned?

I know a guy who has a daughter living in Columbus and he said that he thought she mentioned there was a lot of construction going on. This WAS two weeks ago, so if it was just road construction it probably wrapped up now? I think it was also mentioned in an email from OSU.

@tedysmom I recommend giving the Undergraduate Recruitment for Engineering office a call. I also was not able to initially secure a tour of the undergraduate engineering department, so I gave them a call to see if there was anything that could be done. They set me up with two tour guides and it was awesome! If, for whatever reason, they are not able to do that, I’m not exactly sure what you should try. Perhaps try giving the Undeclared/Re-exploring for Engineering office a call. You can find all these phone numbers by googling “undergraduate academic advisors ohio state.” The engineering one should be one of the first few links.

@ReallySleepy Yeah, I didn’t really notice anything that would be annoying or cause any trouble. Then again, I only stayed for two days and I didn’t see ALL of Columbus. Around the campus, though, it didn’t seem to be a problem.

There is quite a bit of construction. Gee wants to require 2 years of on campus living starting next year so they are building and renovating dorms. Plus part of the oval is ripped up to build some geothermal heating thing. It’s all good stuff.

The only construction we noticed on campus was associated with the renovation of the dorms on South Campus. Not a big deal.

Did you see what any of the on campus housing was like for upper class men? I’m still debating if I’m going to live on or off campus.

@Spudcommando Sorry, I have not seen any of the upperclassmen housing options. The only dorms we saw were mostly freshman and sophomore ones on the south and north campus`. They’re pretty much all the same though, I think. Once again, if you want to see housing blueprints they are on the OSU housing website. Just click a residence hall and it’ll show you your options.
