Just wondering, what my chances are, and what the differnce is from LSU

Hey, I’m a HS junior just looking at my college options… here are my stats (Including next year)

GPA: Non weighted: 3.1
Weighted; 3.7 (about 12 honors, 4 AP)

(Note: my gpa freshman year was about a 2.6, sophomore year about a 3.4 and jr year about a 3.5. I have taken more credits than needed in almost every subject, however i only completed 1.5 years of spanish and 2 years of sign language)

Psat 600 math
570 Reading
490 Writing

Planning on getting between 1800-2100 on sat.

Taking the ACT in April

I’m really involved with my school.

I have been class president for the past 3 year, and plan to do a 4th year, next year.

Clubs im in:

-Young democrats (vice president)
-STAND (its a club to raise awarness about the geneside in Darfur)
-Persian Club
-AIDS peer educating group
-Homecomming/Prom commettie
-Track (indoor & out door)

Outside of school, i have worked at a quiznos for 2 years, and now work for a child abuse clinic. I have also volunteered for a few political campains.

I’m from Montgomry County, Maryland. I go to a public school. MoCo is sopposed to be one of the best public school education systems in the country.

Also what is the differnce from bama and LSU

youll get into both

I’m not as familiar with the SAT scoring but if it equates to a 23 or above then I’d bet you get in no problem. Excellent EC’s for UA.

thanks… i got a 1770 on my real sat … so that equates to about a 26

See if you can get your CR and M scores somewhere around the 1240 mark and you are eligible to apply to the Honors College – the housing is sweet. If you clear the 1300 mark, you could earn a 2/3 tuition scholarship. Check out UA’s out of state scholarships on its site.

i didnt see the honor college web site… hum

You will get into both schools. Here’s the link for Alabama’s Honors College:

thanks, I just took my SAT again and got a 650M 610 R and 630 W…

do I have a chance at honors

I know that you are automatically in for honors if you have a 28 on your ACT and I think your SAT score is high enough for the honors college, although you may want to contact them to make sure.

yea i just looked the cut off is 1240 for honors, so i would get in… how are the honors dorms

I visited over Spring Break and of the 5-6 colleges that I have visited, Alabama’s Honors Dorms were the nicest I’ve seen. All of the Honors dorms seemed really new and I believe they are building even more to open next school year I think. The one I saw was a suite with 4 individual bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a common room, and a little kitchen area with like a refrigerator and some cabinets. In the same hall, there was a lounge area with a big TV and also a pool table. There was also another kitchen area with an oven. I definitely did not expect the dorms or University of Alabama to be so nice and I would definitely recommend a visit there. Good luck.

This is the dorm I saw, in case you’re interested.

Pakjan6, the honors dorms, as well as the honors program, sold my son on Alabama. He loves the idea of having his own room, especially for late-night studying. There is a pool in the community, as well as a dining hall. As for the campus, it’s beautiful and there’s lots to do. Like whitesox24 said, go take a tour.

I would love my own room! However, I am just worried about the people around, i guess if i am in the honors dorm, everyone is generally bright so I would assume being a democrat won’t be too bad?

I love the weather in Alabama

also, is there only honors students living in the dorms? how do they treat honor students compared to other univiersities?

do they get priority scedualing?

Do they pay the same?

do you have smaller classes?

Does it look better to go to bama in the honors program or go to a better univiersty like UMD?

Can you still be in a frat and live in the honors dorms?

Is there a honors frat?

How are internships out of a honor program?

Just wanted to help you answer some of your questions

1) Only honors kids are allowed to live in the honors dorms (ridgecrest west, lakeside west, and riverside west). From everything I’ve experienced, honors kids do get a little bit of preferential treatment by priority registration and housing.
[Housing & Residential Communities - The University of Alabama](http://housing.ua.edu/living_learninghalls.cfm) Scroll down to the honors section and click on the dorms to learn more.

2) Yes. The first few Bama Bound Orientations are for honors kids.

3) The dorms (ridgecrest west, Riverside West, and Lakeside West) are slightly more expensive than other dorms but they are also much nicer. Most students share a four romm suite with three other kids. They have two bathrooms, a living room, and a small kitchen.

4) The university offers many classes that are available only to honors kids. These classes are smaller than normal classes.

5) My guess is being in an honors program would help because you are challenging yourself instead of taking easier classes.

6) It depends on the frat that you join
[Greek Life](http://www.greeklife.ua.edu/)
[UA Greek Life](http://bama.ua.edu/~greeklif/Parents%20Guide.html#Housing)

7) There is no official honors frat but I would imagine some frats have a higher concentration of honors kids than others.

8) Not sure. I would imagine that in such small classes you would get to know your professors well and they could help you find one.

LSU and Bama are similar schools. They are both southern state schools with a strong party atmosphere. Both have generally pretty laid back students who want to enjoy life. College Football is a religious affair. Each offers a broad course selection and many excellent (and not so excellent) professors. I would imagine that you would have a similar college experience if you attended either one.

Compared to LSU, the campus is much prettier and easier to get around. Bama is a walking campus (if I’m not mistaken, students are not allowed to use cars during certain hours of the day to cut down on congestion), but it has a bus system that can get you around campus easily enough.

The people at Bama (and the general area) are very friendly and willing to help you should a problem arise. (Personal anecdote: I met a family one time and they told me I was always welcome to call them should I ever have a problem)

LSU probably has a better college town in Baton Rouge because it is a bigger city. With New Orleans being so close, many students often decide to travel there for the day. Baton Rouge doesn’t revolve around the school though because it is not a traditional college town. (more of a stand alone city)

Tuscaloosa is a much smaller town/city compared to Baton Rouge but I found it to be much more friendly. Also, Tuscaloosa appears to be a traditional college town that revolves around Bama

Hoped that helped you clear some things up. Good luck in choosing the school that is a right fit for you.

Thank you so much, I can tell you took your time to write that.

I love the fact that I could have my own room, and share a living area, kitchen and bathroom. Dorms are a huge plus for me, I know I sound materialistic but if I am going to be spending time studying and such, I would prefer my own area.

I do not qualify for the LSU honor program, I got a 1890 or 1260 on my SATs, so it would probably be more beneficial to go to Alabama honors program versus regular LSU.

I love to be around people so thats why I feel like I would love a huge football school like Alabama. I would get a small scholarship as well.

Parents are giving me about $80,000 for education after High school. So if I can spend less on undergrad. I might have a few bucks for Grad School, which would be very nice.

I guess what it comes down to is my visit. I’ll apply to Alabama as soon as the app. comes out and I will be automatically admitted into the honors program.

Thanks for everyones help.

You should definitely visit the campus before you commit. (preferably while school is in session) It will give you a good feel the general atmosphere of the school.

Pakjan6, are you considering a retake of the SAT? The only reason why I ask is this – if you do, and you hit the 1300 mark, you get 2/3 tuition for four years versus $3,500 a year. That would save you some money. Along the way, you can compete for additional monies in your major – most departments have scholarships.

Priority registration and housing are definite perks – ones that my son will enjoy. We live more than 12 hours from the campus, and one of the things that also impresses my son is the friendliness of students and staff. He has had to e-mail UA staff members with questions, and he receives a quick reply.

hum funny how your son thinks that the staff replies fast because it has taken more than 24 hours for them to call me back, I called yestarday to ask a few questions.

But I doubt I will take the SAT again, I am taking the ACT in June. Ill let you all know how I do, then maybe I’ll take the SAT again. I do not know.

Thanks for all your insight…
