so what does the acceptance letter look like?

Dear ______,

It is an honor to inform you of the Admissions Committee's decision to offer you a place in the California Institute of Technology's Class of 2013.

The staff, faculty and students on the Admissions Committee see in you, not only an accomplished student, but also a person with the passion and creativity to pursue study in mathematics, science and engineering at the highest level. You have an opportunity to take your place amongst a community of scholars with an extraordinary record of accomplishment and a shared commitment to become leaders in the scientific community. We know you have many choices. It is our sincere hope that you will choose to pursue your education at Caltech.

With your admission to Caltech, your thoughts may turn to attending college. Please note, however, that your admission is contingent on the continuation of your strong academic and personal record.

On behalf of the Caltech community, I extend our warmest congratulations. We hope to welcome you to campus in the fall.

Sincerely,

Richard W. Bischoff
Director of Admissions

There's also a handwritten note on the bottom with something related to your application like "good job on _" or "your _ was really impressive" or a response to one of your essays.

Anyone else feel the handwritten note was a bit arbitrary? Mine was about community service which I'm kind of sure I didn't place all that much emphasis on in my application.

Mine was spot on with what I love to do. I mean it was the generic sentence with my EC stuck in but he picked the perfect one LOL. "Maybe you can start a rock band at Caltech!"
