Juxtaposed?

will students from same HS applying to same colleges compared side by side?

I highly doubt that the admissions officers have the time to sit there and be like "OMG Sarah and Johnny both went to X high, lets compare both of them and we'll only offer admission to the one with higher stats even though they're both qualified!"

You're compared to other applicants, but as far as I know, nothing more specific than that.

i agree wit syndey

there were at least 3 people from my high school that i know that alll got accepted to Notre Dame and are there now to be Chemical Engineers (all 3 from my high school)

Wowser,

I don't know about comparing "side by side", but yes, all adcoms have available information regarding all applicants from the same secondary school. Comparisons do occur; however, understand that the objective of adcoms are not to weed applicants out -- rather, they are evaluating each student's potential to be academically successful at that college. If that means that 3 applicants are accepted from that school, or 10 applicants, or just 1, they will follow the process of evaluating according to their admissions criteria.

That said, just because they have the ability to compare (and they DO have the ability), that should not be enough to send you into an anxious state about it. Ultimately, quality students will be evaluated on their own merits, and if they stand out, they will stand out regardless of the number of students applying from the same secondary school. It's really beyond your control at any rate.

Yes, colleges do look at students from the same school side by side, and the higher ranked the school, the more it matters. If Harvard has taken only 1 kid from your school most years, they are not likely to take 3 this year.

it's cornell actually...

i see how rank will come into play.

so adcoms will take their time to compare applicants from same school?

I think everyone on this website worries too much. Do your best, appy, that's it. Sorry. It's just that the endless threads of panicking kids are killing me.

Schools have an adcom assigned to your region. They get to know the high schools and often even get to know the counselor/s at your school. They organize and read the applications from their region. They of course note who is applying from where. They want kids from as many places as possible. If you come from a very competitive high school and many apply from your school, it becomes much harder to get in than if you apply from a school where few others apply.
