Juxtaposing foreign engineering job markets

Alright, so as far as average starting salaries go for engineers, is it safe to say US is the undisputed champion?

I have heard UK they do things like 2 year training programs (similar to intern) with no permanent commitment on their side, and then if they like you you can start working as a regular employee on a relatively small starting pay like 40k pounds.

I think Australia has a similar structure to the US (with slightly lesser range of opportunities and smaller pay).

New Zealand is in dire need of engineers, so pay might be between Australia and US (dont know this for a fact, just my intuition).

Anomalies aside, what is your take on this topic? Feel free to bring other countries like India, China, Singapore, Israel, Japan etc to the discussion.

40k GBP, when converted to USD, is more than most starting engineering salaries are over here on this side of the pond.

That is after 2 years training.

Also, we are talking about London (read EXPENSIVE CITY), so a comparable American city would be NYC, you would be making considerably higher than that as an engineer in such an expensive city.
