K...here's the story.

Our school has a combined freshman/sophomore English course. I.e. everyone in the school takes the same class for 2 years in a row, most likely with a different teacher the second year.
9th grade: 4.0
10th grade: 3.5?

My 10th grade Eng. teacher absolutely hated me and "failed" (hyperbole, obviously) me on all of my essays. Fortunately, I somehow (miraculously) got my raw score to a 94.8 with quizzes, hw, etc., but she still refused to give me a 4.0 (94.5-100) because, as she says, my "writing is not up to the standard of 4.0 students."

Of course (after speaking with my teacher), I talked to my assistant principal, who is more than willing to raise my grade to a 4.0, since my raw score is within our school's 4.0 range. But she was telling me that it REALLY wouldn't matter, since a 3.5 at our school would be considered good anyway??

Am I crazy for thinking that getting a lower grade in the 2nd year of the same course would be a very bad thing (I had been seriously panicking before I talked to my AP)? I'm basically hearing from my guidance department/college info sessions that the MOST important thing is the "transcript. Not GPA but the transcript," since it "paints a picture of your academic career throughout high school." Yeah, GPA-wise one 3.5 really shouldn't hurt me too much, but transcript-wise, I'm worried that it could have made me look like I was lazy in that class instead of just having a bad relationship with the teacher.

My particular situation has been resolved, I guess, since I'm getting the 4.0, but several of my friends are facing the same problem with English and other classes in general.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.
