Increasingly, we are becoming a society in which who we are is less important than what we do. we define ourselves by our occupation and calculate our values based on our professional success. Gone are the days when students were advised to follow their passion. Now we live and die by the bottom line.

Should a person's worth be determined by his or her level of productivity?

In the world we live in today, people from eclectic backgrounds work, play, and enjoy life together. Each person's worth should be determined by his or her level of productivity to due the fast pace and competitive world we live in where the strong pry on the weak. History and literature is rife with empirical evidence where the worth of the person is determined by productivity. Several empirical examples such as the civil service exam and Anthem.
The civil service exam was established in the Han Dynasty of China and since then has brought a culture of academic and professional success. This exam brought smarter and more intelligent citizens into the bureaucracy. Even today, countries that use the civil service exam such as India and China are one of the top economies. Businesses also offer a type of civil service exam to bring in the top employees. The ones who are more productive are the ones who get the job. What we do is far more important than who we are because our actions are what define us. The civil service exam is the epitome of the idea that we should define ourselves by our levels of productivity.
As demonstrated in the novel, Anthem, the citizens were all equal, but the main character, Equality, was different from the others. He was smarter, faster, and bigger than the rest of the citizens. Equality discovered electricity and tried to change the status quo of the prime eval time period. His productivity as a scientist was shut out because the other researchers believed that he was too productive. The other researchers saw electricity as the devil and altogether stopped a radical new invention. Equality's productivity was looked down up in Anthem. By judging people by his or her productivity we create an environment for improvement and competition.
After meticulous examination, it can be concluded that a person's worth should be determined by his or her level of productivity based on the civil service exam and Anthem. The pragmatism to be productive and work harder is driven by the social fact that a person's worth is based on his or her level of productivity and thus creates an environment where humanity can ameliorate itself and further its knowledge.
