So I had a 2009 edition of the Kaplan GRE prep book and I went online and registered. Took the diagnostic and only got around 27% of the questions correct. Most of the math I forgot and the vocab section was a bit hard for me to comprehend, without rereading the passages.

Will self studying actually help me improve or will I be stuck at this horrible grade? Ive seen alot of my friends study for various standardized tests and most don't really improve all to mich, which I why I ask.

Do not despair! Self studying definitely helps your score. You just need to get accustomed to the types of questions asked and familiarize yourself with strategies to answer them. Of course you will also need to review math and vocab, but practicing is key! Good luck!

You need to study then if you want any shot at getting a decent score. Otherwise, I would reconsider going to grad school in the first place if you do not feel at all prepared to score well on the GRE test let alone succeeding in grad school.
