Hey guys,

I'm going to need to attend one of those prep courses for the SAT, and can't decide between Kaplan's program of the Princeton Review's. The only difference that matters to me is which one delivers better results.

I know that's a vague question, as it sometimes all depends on yourself, but I would like to get the opinions of you CC'ers.

Please provide me with your thoughts. Thanks.

Neither. The korean places are alot better.

Ok personally i tried princeton review and i thought it to be not effective at all. I would expect the same from kaplan. The small asian places are the most effective

arklogic,

could you clarify what those "asian places" are? I have seen a department in some large asian supermarkets that have test prep programs. Is this what you are referring to?

Are they all that better? And how did the PR affect your scores, etc?

uhm i mean places like not chains like princeton review, but private institutions (they are mostly korean: gateway, elite, hansamm, etc). i have taken a princeton review class and the strategies they teach are ineffective and what they do is pretty much read their prep book to you.

Could anyone else comment on this?

And arklogic, I would appreciate it if you could provide some contact information for these private institutions? I am in NJ, so I hope they're within reach. Thanks a lot.

i personally find the small asian places to be a complete waste of money. I went to a few over the summer. At each one, the teachers just gave us packets to do and never gave any pointers on how to take the test. I think Princeton Review is the best. My teacher gave me great 'tricks' and really pinpointed the questions most frequently asked on the SATS. My score also improved from a 2030 to 2210

i don't know about SAT, but for ACT, my score improved from 30 to 35

azheng, thanks for describing your situation. I like the fact that they give you strategies, and may be able to explain them better than the book. Anyone else?

try Kaplan

I tried Kaplan and I like it a lot. They offer u a hugee lesson book which u can learn w/ online tutors who are very helpful in explianing problems...they have flashcards of Math, Writing and Vocab sections....you can design lots of quizzes through the program and Kaplan even has a book to raise ur score even moreee....if ur a very good self learner, then Kaplan's a good choice. I never tried Princeton...but I recommend Kaplan's.

Hope it helps :)

most asian places, you take a practice once a week, and another day of the week u go over the test and a lesson packet. all the lesson packets supposedly cover all the material you need know.

its really up to you. my score increased from 1800-2100+

PR is better than Kaplan due to the fact that it is more difficult (u get the point). But if u wanna get into really prestigious colleges, go for Barron's 2400. Everything else is rubbish in front of Barron's. U wont believe how helpful this book can be. And enroll in www.kaptest.com and enter the free SATQuisbank, with 1024 SAT questions where u can plan ur own tests regarding were u have problems as well as the level of difficulty. It is great.

Well... I took the Kaplan course and I got a 2390 (first time). But I have no idea if that's a direct result of it. But I did really like 4 in-class practice tests they give you.

what makes the barron's books so good compared to the others? I've asked some friends, and they have also recommended it? And, I don't think Barron's offers test-prep courses, do they?
