Taking SATs for the first time this October...is this the best time? I will be a junior. Is Kaplan better than PR?

No, Kaplan is horrible for SAT.
Princeton is OK.

The majority of feedback I’ve heard about Kaplan has been negative. Princeton seems to receive mixed reviews.

This, of course, is secondhand information-- I have taken neither SAT course. I did take the LSAT prep course at Kaplan, and it was not worth the money, in my opinion.

Neither course should be taken. Everything they teach is in their own published test prep books, which you can get for under $20 on Amazon. The only thing they do during the lessons is go over what type of problems you can expect on the test, which really doesn’t require $1000+. The only methods they teach you are process of elimination (eliminate extreme choices, out-of-scope stuff, distortions) and learn some vocab (Direct Hits has a really good list, no need for Kaplan or PR). Just do practice tests. You get the most improvements by doing so.

Read RocketReview SAT, which is written by a co-founder of Princeton Review who is no longer with the company. The book is actually quite good, particularly the essay section.

Neither.

However, if you had to pick, go with Princeton.

Kaplan is horrible. And I don’t just say this from what other people said. I know because my SAT prep class uses it and it has everything a study guide shouldn’t have; typos, mistyped answers, switching answers, switching explanations.

It’s horrible. The questions themselves don’t even look like questions from the real SAT.
