KCL's Reputation

I'm in Canadian high school, considering studying law in the UK. I've been offered a spot at KCL with a 27000 pound scholarship, one of the full Dickson Poon ones (that's over three years, not annually),

I've also been given offers to all the top Canadian business schools. I applied to business in Canada as law is purely a graduate study in North America.

What I'm trying to assess is the strength of KCL's reputation. I'm trying not to be a "reputation whore" but since a foreign law degree is not particularly usefully, a school with prestige is kind of important.

My question is this: just how good is KCL's reputation in the UK? It's held in very good repute in North America. Also, what are some schools in North America that you feel it is comparable to?

Sorry, I know the first post is a bit weird; I first wrote it in a UK forum.

Unlike in the US, many employers in the UK (and colleges themselves) regard schools on a department by department basis when talking about prestige. Unlike in the US, you are admitted to study with a specific faculty, so a biology major might never sit next to a non-bio major in a class setting, as in NEVER.

Kings has, for example, a globally renowned department of War Studies.

I am fairly certain that their law school is very prestigious. You can do a law degree plus a J.D. from Columbia if you are an excellent student- they have a joint program that you apply into after a year or two.

Yeah, I know about that program, and it would be incredible to graduate with a JD from Columbia at 22 years old, but only two get in, so I’m not willing to bet my future on that.

While I know they have a great law department, the name brand value of a Uni matters to me, as a foreign law degree isn’t super useful. How would you rate KCL as a university in general? What kind of North American schools would you say it’s in a league with?

KCL has a very good reputation in the UK - not the creme de la creme (it’s not Oxbridge) but still very good.

So what sort of schools do you feel it’s comparable to?

Warwick, Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, Manchester and Durham, amongst others.

Hey, I’m from England. kcl is an excellent uni. Excellent excellent. Not as reputable as ucl or icl, or Oxbridge… But it would be as reputable as a runner up to icl or ucl. I guess it could be like Warwick but id say it’s better. I’d say it’s like Bristol and Durham and Edinburgh but better than Manchester. However, this is purely on how it’s perceived in the uk but ranking may differ.

For example, Oxbridge and Durham are seen as comparable unis in terms of reputation but actually Durham isn’t the best around tbh.

I’ve been looking into American universities because I would like to apply to some, and I’d say kcl was seen as somewhere like rice for example. Or maybe Berkeley? That kind of region.

Very good uni. All my comparisons are based on perception from a uk point of you so I may be wrong!

Difficult to compare us and UK due to there just being less unis in the uk so there’s more scope for error when comparing to the many us unis. So that’s why I say it’s the rice/Berkeley “region”

KCL has an excellent reputation worldwide.

If you want to know which US colleges it’s “in league” with, you can check out world university rankings.

^The nice thing about QS rankings is that they also have rankings for different criteria. You can find subject rankings and faculty rankings lists, for example.

Add that to your scholarship (given to an international student), and I’m just confused as to why you’re hesitating :open_mouth:
