Is anyone else really antsy and completely ready to be on campus already? I am converting my desire to fly up to Hanover This Instant into numerous posts on the Dartmouth boards here.

I guess I'm asking...in the time between now and September (or August, depending on your DOC trip)...what are you all going to be doing?

working!! i have to raise $2300 for my summer earnings... but it's well worth the effort =)

same here. gotta raise $2000. well, $1500 now because i got a groovy scholarship.

hm... i need to get me one of those groovy scholarships...

WOW that is a lot of money. I need to find a good job, as the one I have now is a volunteer job...so really I don't get much out of it but "personal satisfaction." Which has yet to be defined. ^_^

yea..i gotta earn $2300 too. i found a job at a local flower market. if any of you still havent found a job, you should consider finding an outdoors one...its soo much better than working inside all day. also, if any of you have a work-study as part of your financial aid package, what kinds of jobs are you hoping to get on-campus?

i have a workstudy on my financial aid package, i was hoping to get a paid internship in a lab. that was what my host had for her work study and she was an 8 so i'm assuming that i could find one for next year which would be cool...although i won't mind working outdoors...except in the winter

Though $2300 sounds like a lot of money now, it really isn't. The past two summers, I've managed to bank over $5000 each year. Just be prepared to work a lot of overtime and not hvae much of a social life. Trust me, it's worth it.

what kind of jobs did you have, wisconsinguy? i have a feeling i will need to earn that much 'coz the 'rents are going through some medical and financial problems so i'd feel bad asking them to get me things for college (i also need to raise 2300 for my summer earning).

working overtime isn't a problem and i live so far away from my friends anyway (i commute to school) so i won't trip over the lack of a social life.

I was in warehousing two summers ago and split last summer between a warehouse and a foundry. The key is finding a full-time job that has a lot of overtime to give, because you make most of your money in overtime. Time and a half works wonders. Frankly, I'd look for places where starting salary is $7.50 or more, and where you can legitimately expect to work about sixty hours per week; if you get paid a lot more, obviously, you can afford to work a bit less. If this is the case, then see if you can pick up a job with very flexible hours for weekends or off periods.

As important as earning the money is not spending it. If you're living with your parents, you should be spending less than $10/week on non-essentials (I think last year I spent $20 the entire summer on things that weren't directly related to work or stuff for school).

Once you get to Dartmouth, there's a few ways you can save money. First, don't buy your books--see if you can get them from the library, and then renew them until the term is over. I save on average $150/term by doing this. Second, put your dining plan on minimal as soon as you can. I believe Dartmouth predicts that you'll spend $1350/term (spending $1200 on the Big Green plan, with 150 bonus dollars) on food. If you eat intelligently, this is not the case. There are many free food events, and if you're not all that into pounds of salad or organic-vegan-kosher food, it's possible to get by on much less. And because Dartmouth thinks you'll be going elsewhere to get the food that you're not buying from DDS, they still count $1200 as the figure for financial aid. So I save $475/term from Dartmouth's list price by using the minimal plan.

Combined with common sense (don't overspend on miscellaneous things, etc.), I'm saving about $2000 per year, or a bit less than $8000 over the course of four years. Compared to the $165,000 list price, it's not all that much, but it's a start.

Probably working, hanging around Toledo, maybe giving a few music lessons, not much else.

I don't even know how to begin finding a job, so unfortunately I probably wont be working. I'll be in France for a few weeks at the beginning of the summer and then I'll be at home for the most part, counting down the days until my DOC trip.

Please, please, let September 13 come quickly.

taurustorus,
I think that the $1200 package is the minimum that you can get as a freshman . Daughter said it usually ends up being more than enough for her as she ususally has a few hundred $to spend down during the last days of the term.

If you do end up living in EW, there is a weekly tea every wednesday afternoon. They also have a number of dinners.

As WG said, there will be many events where there are free found.
D just told me that you can sign up on a free food blitz, where you will be blitzed for events that have free fo0od.

IF you will wokint on campus over the summer but your resume together over the summer. Keep checking out student employment to see what the job listings look like so that you can apply early and have your job set up pretty close to when you get on campus.
