Keeping Homesickness Away by Staying Busy

College has started . . . . classes are getting harder . . . and it's a common time for freshman especially, to feel homesick.

Everyone says to join clubs, and that is good advice. But it needs an explanation.

In high school, you have a daily routine, a schedule that you're kinda used to. In college, classes run at odd times, and there is a lot more independent time, with work you have to do by yourself. However, to fill the time that would normally be covered by your structure, and thta is not taken up by classes or socializing (very important!), clubs and other activities fill that gap, particularly if you were very busy in high school.

You have your own schedule, you're almost an adult, act like it. Go to the gym - it's a nice break and gives a chance to reach non-academic goals. Join clubs you're interested in and become involved. Relish the responsibility and the skills you are actually learning. See what interesting things your university offers - piano or guitar lessons?, cooking classes?. Think of what you want to do with your time as a person, and do that.

This will fill up some of the time that is otherwise spent talking to your friends back home or missing your dog, and it will make you feel more connected with your university. You will know friends in similar clubs, learn about new facets of the university administration, meet professors, etc . . .

Also, your dorm room, as messy as it is, is your home. So personalize it. Clean it regularly. Treat it as if you own it.

Hope this helps! Please message me if anyone has any questions.
