do people get their laptops stolen at rice if they dont use laptop locks?

I asked this same question about a year ago, before my daughter started her freshman year at Rice:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/517325-laptop-locks.html

She didn’t get laptop lock. I think if you’re pretty smart about not leaving your laptop unattended (in the library, for instance), there’s not much to worry about.

yeah, Laptops are stolen if left OUT and unattended. In your room, Its safe. i got one because my mom insisted. but then i realized its impractical and i cant lock up all my computers…

even though the inner bedrooms have locks in some rooms, no one locks them when they arent there

Yeah, don’t worry about a laptop lock, unless you don’t trust your roommate to not leave your door unlocked. If you don’t leave your laptop out in the open it probably won’t get stolen.

Bikes - another matter. ALWAYS lock your bike. I believe that you can buy U-locks from the Rice Police for only about $10, (but I could be wrong about that…) Repeat - always lock your bike, and/or ride a clunker.

I’ve left my laptop in my college commons overnight (…a few times…) without problems. It was never intentional, but just the “okay I’ll run up to my room and lie down for ten minutes” thing while working on an essay for something that I’d never wake up from. That being said, it’s a stupid thing to do and don’t do it. But if you do, you probably live with your friends and they won’t want to steal your ****.

anxiousmom is right - lock your bike.

one of my bikes (30 years old) was left unlocked with a busted chain, rear wheel and chain ring… it got stolen

RUPD recovered it for me (they made it a fixed gear and put new pedals and stuff) so it was better off in the end, but they steal even the crappiest of stuff

Cheap generic bikes from walmart/target are the most stolen. pawning off a cheap schwinn or an old bike is much easier than trying to sell my Specialized Allez Elite road bike anonymously

You can also get them insured along with musical instruments.

I’ve left my whole book bag with laptop, mp3-player, wallet, keys, etc in the Commons for 4 days (long weekend), and it was still there. I wouldn’t worry about getting your stuff stolen if you’re in your college.

__Jude - read the police blotter. its that kind of behavior that is the reason stuff gets stolen all the time

you may get away with it, but stuff disappears

Sorry, but that just sounds like a horrible idea. Just to be safe, I wouldn’t…

also ive had friends who have had stuff stolen because of doing the same thing. someone left their wallet out and surprise surprise it vanished

The simple way to not get anything valuable stolen: don’t leave any it unattended.

to sum it up OP - you do not need a laptop lock. we advise caution with any piece of expensive equipment, as always. however, the odds of getting a laptop stolen is minimal from your room.

The only time caution is advised is when outside contractors may be working in your room (say there is a leak or something). just be smart and dont leave your wallet or cash lying out. not that there have been any such incidents, its just for safety

Yeah, I know, that was dumb of me. But I was out of town and didn’t even realize it was gone. Oops.

thanks guys
