Hi, I was looking for some advice on my schedule. I know there are a couple of other threads on this but my situation is a little different so I decided to make a new thread. I’m a Kelley DA but not a Hutton DA. I should be able to get in Hutton after the first semester but I had questions on that as well… Also will credit from AP tests satisfy gen ed credits? I’ll have credit for both Micro and Macro so I was wondering if that counts towards the SH gen ed requirements. I have Calc, finite, speech, comp credits done as well along with some BUS-UN credits.
Freshman Fall
• BUS-A 100: Basic Accounting Skills (1 credit) Winston
• BUS-K 201: Computer in Business (3 credits) Walbridge
• BUS-C 104: Business Presentations (3 credits) Butters-1st Haywood-2nd Deeds-3rd
• BUS-T 175: Kelley Compass I: The Individual (1.5 credits) Yoder but really no major grade difs
• HISP-S 280: Spanish Grammar in Context (3 credits) Trajkovic
• AMID-D 191: Design Studies Form and Function (3 credits) Smith MAY REPLACE W/ other gen ed
• FOLK-F 111: World Music and Culture (3 credits)
Total Credits: 17.5
I want to get into Hutton after my first semester should I go with that many classes or drop one? You have to do a minimum of 14 credits to get in. Would the review be done in time to take honors classes in the spring? If so I will look for Honors equivalents of some of my spring classes.
Freshman Spring
• BUS-A 201: Financial Accounting (3 credits)
• STAT-S 301: Business Statistics (3 credits)
• HISP-S 324: Intro Study of Hisp Cultures (3 credits)
• AST-A 103: The Search for life in the Universe (3 credits)
• BUS-L 201: Legal Environment of Business (3 credits)
Total Credits: 15
I am planning to do a semester abroad in Spain during my sophomore year, what are your thoughts on that? I think I have room in my schedule for it. I would plan on doing the intermediate to advanced Barcelona Spain trip. I was also wondering if anybody has any knowledge on classes that you take over there. I found this, but I don’t really understand what it is trying to say.
16 IU credits applicable to Business degree
4 credits in Spanish Language (intensive for the first 3 weeks)
12 credits in CIEE program and ESCI business courses (at least 1 business course)
Optional, unpaid 3-credit internship (Prerequisite: five or more semesters of college-level Spanish.)
Last question on studying abroad is what impact would it have on my GPA?
Sophomore Fall
• BUS-K 303: Technology and Business Analysis (3 credits)
• BUS-C 204: Business Communication (3 credits)
• BUS-T 275: Kelley Compas II: The Team (1.5 credits)
• BUS-D 270: Global Business Environments (1.5 credits)
• BUS-A 202: Managerial Accounting (3 credits)
• HISP-S 326: Intro to Spanish Linguistics (3 credits)
• BUS 272: Global Business Immersion (1.5 credits) Not sure if I need if studying abroad…?

- Yes, micro and macro count for SH gen ed credit even if you have an AP credit.
- I could be wrong, but I don't think the Hutton review would be done in time because they would need to see your first semester grades in order to admit you, and you register for 2nd semester classes before your 1st semester grades are available.
- I would strongly suggest removing one of those gen eds from your first semester schedule. You are already ahead of the game with some credits coming in, so there is no reason to overload first semester with 17.5 credits.
- I know nothing about studying abroad because I am not going to do it, but your advisers does, so talk to them about it. You have some time to get this solidified.
Other than that, your schedule looks good. Beware that last year, they would only let you take 2 of A100, C104, K201, and T175 in your first semester due to lack of class availability, so make sure you have some backups ready, which it seems like you do. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I missed something.
You have to complete I-core before you can study abroad, so the earliest you could study abroad would be first semester junior year if you complete I-core the summer between sophomore and junior year. My daughter completed the CIEE Barcelona Business and Culture program this semester, her second semester of junior year. She LOVED it, but she did have trouble getting the classes she wanted, and ended up with one extra A&H class and one less Finance class than she planned. (The second A&H class didn’t fulfill any requirements since she already had one A&H class.) Things will still work out for her senior year, but she has less flexibility and more classes her senior year than she hoped. If you have any questions about the CIEE Barcelona Business & Culture program, maybe I or my daughter can answer.
@iubaccounting Thank you very much for the advice!
@stbemtpynest I would love to find out more about the program! I guess my main questions revolve around what do you actually do in the program? That is kind of broad, but for example… What kind of classes do you take while in Spain? What were some specific things that she would recommend doing along with things that she would recommend avoiding?
No problem. I’m not sure if there will be any restrictions on taking business classes like last year or not, but just be prepared.
@GRAYSON1234 Here is the link to the Barcelona Study Abroad program my daughter did:
https://www.ciee.org/study-abroad/spain/barcelona/business-culture/
It gives a good overview of the program and even lists the courses available. The IU study abroad office would be able to tell you how each course maps to IU courses, and what requirements they fill. There are other study abroad options in Barcelona available to Kelley students. Here is the link to the Kelley Overseas Study site:

You register for your classes through CIEE, but you don’t get your schedule until a few weeks before you arrive in Barcelona. One tip is to make sure you have some flexibility in your senior year schedule, in case you don’t get the exact classes you want during study abroad. Like I mentioned above, my daughter hoped to take 3 Finance classes but only got 2. Luckily she can still fit in everything she needs senior year, but she will have full loads both semesters. You have to take at least one business class at the local university (ESCI) where you attend with both local students and those studying abroad. The remainder of classes you take at CIEE with other students in the study abroad program. You have to take one Spanish language class and depending on your level of Spanish you also have to take at least one business class in Spanish. But because they messed up my daughter’s schedule (one class ended at 10:30 at CIEE and her next class started at 10:30 at ESCI and they are at least 15 minutes apart!), the only way to resolve it was to take all but her Spanish language class in English.
I asked her - she can’t think of anything to avoid (except maybe bringing a laptop to a hostel - a travel friend got his laptop stolen). Things she recommends is to participate in all of the “extra” programs CIEE provides - day trips, cooking program, etc. You have the option of staying with a family or in an apartment. She stayed with a family and would recommend it. You get more food included in that option too! She also recommends doing as much traveling as you can - you may never have another opportunity to do so much travel so cheaply again. She and her new friends took cheap airlines or trains and stayed in hostels or airbnbs to keep travel affordable. She went to Madrid, Paris, London, Munich, Amsterdam, Seville, Rome, Valencia and a couple other cities in Italy!
Saw this a while back and forgot to thank you… Thanks! @stbemtpynest Hopefully I can talk with someone about this tomorrow at orientation!
