@bigboyk_ I definitely would not count on getting scholarships after your freshman year. There are a few, but many of them are only for 1 or 2 students in the whole university. You might be able to get more scholarships, but make sure you can pay for 4 years at the same price as freshman year before committing.
I would recommend the KLLC just because you will make a lot of friends there. People always have their doors open, and you automatically have something in common with everyone. The other benefits they tout like networking events are not very valuable - the main benefit is the people. IU doesn’t do early action - you just have to apply by November 1 to get maximum scholarship consideration. Nobody really knows whether they will raise the standards for DA until they decide.
I’m in the KLLC right now and totally love it. Everyone on my floor knows each other (Business kids tend to be pretty social or at least open to meeting others) and there’s always ample support for hw and tests.
Quick question: Can one get into the business honors program (3.7+ gpa) without being accepted into Hutton Honors (I don’t think I have a very good chance at it)?
@bigboyk_ @CWAE182025 You can get into business honors without Hutton. However, getting into business honors is difficult for anyone not in ACE because there are lots of qualified applicants and not very many spots. Essentially, the benefit of the honors program is access to take the honors versions of some classes in Kelley. Sometimes, the honors versions have higher grade distributions and/or will allow students to work with more motivated students when doing group projects. The honors program also allows you to take honors I-Core. I-Core is taken in first semester of junior year. It is a group of classes that include a large group project at the end. In honors I-Core, grades are higher than regular (even after adjusting for quality of students imo) and you would expect to work with better students on the group project. I just finished honors I-Core and I’d be happy to answer questions if you have them.
ACE is a program for a limited number of DA Freshman (varies each year but I believe it was 100 for 2017-2018) that provides them with an opportunity to enter Kelley Honors automatically with a certain GPA. The students are also put into 2 honors classes with other ACE students (referred to as the ACE Block). The ACE application is by invitation.
Some business fraternities are harder to get into than others but there is no objective “best” business fraternity. There are different fits for different people… and the proper fit for some (like myself) may be no business frat. They are wonderful ways to have a built-in group of close friends and professional development opportunities but I don’t believe they are necessary by any means for social and academic “success” at Kelley.
Unfortunately, We can’t make direct admit day because my d is in the Dominican with her HS. We are touring later in Feb. Has anyone shadowed a business student through the Kelley host program?
Thanks for all of your great answers. Based on AP classes I took in my underclassmen days and the full IB program I’m currently doing where I’ll take the tests next year, I’ll come in with 36 credits at the least (5 in IB Bio = 8 credits, 5 in IB Lang and Lit= 8 credits, 5 in IB European History=8 credits, 3 in AP Calc AB= 3 credits (I’ll try to grind hard and get a 4 so I can test out of M119 but I doubt it), 4 in AP US Government and Politics = 3 credits, 4 in AP US History = 6 credits). I’m trying to fit AP Computer Science, AP Stat or AP Micro/Macro into my senior year schedule which isn’t due yet or self study for the test(s). It could go up to the lower 40s for credit. So I have more than a year’s worth of credits. How do you suggest I use these, or how did it affect you coming into college (it’s mostly for gen eds and electives)? Since I have a lot, how do you suggest I set up my schedule freshman year? Do you know anybody at Kelley who did the IB diploma and how it helps them now?
Way to be so ambitious in high school! These will give you a lot more flexibility in your schedule so you can take classes you want to and/or add more majors and minors. Some of them will only count for general credits but I know you would have to take Micro/Macro/Calc for Kelley if you don’t test out. I can’t match the advice of a professional counsellor but I took a lot of fun electives my freshman year (Improv, Intro to Acting, EDM Production, Self Defence etc) and still have room for many extracurriculars since I took a lot of requirements out in High School. I’m sure there are people in Kelley who did IB, but no one really talks about IB unless it’s investment banking XD
Thank you! How does Kelley also compare to other elite undergrad schools like Ivy Leagues? I have a family member who is unfortunately telling me that just because it’s a state school that it’s not good enough when every ranking says I’ll be totally prepared and I can just get my MBA from a top 10 school. What’s the reputation amongst employers?
This year we have 3 off to M and a handful (not sure exactly how many) on to B&B this year. Quite a few off to DSO. Consulting workshop places well but even driven students who aren’t in it usually get placed for consulting.
Do you think it’s a good idea with my GPA to apply for Hudson and Holland through the SSA? It looks to be a great opportunity (especially the mentorship part).
Matthieu, so I’m interested in consulting (sustainability and econ dev especially) for a big 4 firm or crowe horwath or accenture. I’ll definitely join clubs and get involved with career services, but based on what you’ve seen at IU, for kids who want consulting, what GPAs get you to what places? For example, you need like a 3.9 and to be in the Workshop to get MBB definitely – and you have to interview well and kill case studies. How is it for a big 4 consulting arm, workshop and non-workshop?
I hope my question isn’t confusing you. If it is, please let me know?
I absolutely know what you’re talking about, and that’s one of the reasons consulting is such a great career path here. You don’t need the workshop for Big4 (or anywhere aside from MBB, I think some people have even gotten interviews there without it). Unlike investment banking where it’s workshop or broke, there are plenty of kids who do just fine in consulting without having been in the consulting workshop. Many don’t even apply for the workshop. I’m not sure about GPA requirements but I would guess anywhere north of a 3.5 won’t close doors at non-MBB firms. WIth that being said, everyone I’ve spoken with has absolutely loved and recommended the workshop. Hope that helps!
Wow, that really does help. It’s nice not to have that pressurethay you have to do certain ECs to get into a workshop or it won’t work.
Another question: I know Kelley places mostly in Chicago, Indy, and NYC. I am interested however, in the following cities: Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, Boston, and maybe DC because I could just live with my mom for two years. With networking, would you say it’s hard to get the city you want? ATL and Charlotte have such low taxes and great nightlife, and I’ve always seen myself as a mid-south type of kid. Or would you recommend just focusing on getting placed no matter what city?
I am planning a summer visit to Kelley and a visit to DA day next year BTW. Thanks Matthieu.
I forgot to ask: I highly doubt it, but for scholarships, can you send in first semester grades from senior year? You can send in ACT/SAT scores until January as long as you get the whole app in by the November deadline. My weighted is at a 3.85 and I’m on track for all A’s this semester so I hope it’ll go over a 4.0!
Also, when is the common app open? What is the earliest you’ve seen potential DA students apply? I am taking a college app course over the summer.
