Have to admit I feel a little overwhelmed trying to guide son in preparing schedule worksheet for orientation. Can anyone provide a good sample schedule or a starting place? I'm having a hard time finding general requirements/degree requirements and I want to make efficient use of orientation time

Unless your son is also a Hutton Honors student, he will meet with an academic advisor directly within the Kelley School of Business. During that meeting, they will ask him exactly what majors/co-majors he’s interested in and what his strengths are based on placement tests.

To have a head start, you’ll need to review I-Core requirements (courses that need to be completed before the I-Core program of his junior year) and IU’s Gen Ed requirements.

This is a link to all I-Core requirements:

http://ud.iub.edu/docs/Planning%20Docs/fall_2012_bus_tab_sheet_master.pdf

He’ll be handed this during his advising appointment. At the very top of the page there is a small section for IU Gen Ed courses not already covered by classes he will need to take for I-Core. So he’ll need to figure out two Arts and Humanities courses as well as culture/language and Natural Science.

Generally, students complete everything from English Composition to Microeconomics in the second section during their first year at IU. That should give you a good starting base.

Coste gave you the key sheet. I use that in all my degree planning as a student. It’s very helpful and you should learn to understand it fully and each class.

There is an online version of this that will show the student’s current credits counting for each one and marking it off. The advisers even use a similar version of this and it’s open for everyone. He may not be in the system yet, so wait till you get the actual sheet. On the sheet’s back, there are instructions to using this online feature.
