Hello,

I am a direct admit to Kelley for this fall (Fall 2014) and have also gotten accepted into the KLLC. I am entering IU with 45 credits from AP exams. Because of this, I will be exempt from Calculus, Microecon, Macroecon, and most likely some gen ed requirements.

I am not a Hutton honors student but would like to get into the program by the end of my freshman year. I know you need a 3.7 gpa and 14 credits to get into the Hutton honors program so I want to structure my schedule in a way where I can do well but still be somewhat challenged. I am used to rigorous course work (I took 7 AP courses my senior year) but I don't want to be completely consumed by school work like I was this last year. I am looking to get involved with clubs and such and so I want to also be free to do this.

This is what I am considering for my schedule:

K201- Computer in Business (3 cr.)
C104- Business Presentations (3 cr.)
M118- Finite Math (3 cr.)
A100-Basic Accounting Skills (1 cr.)
T175- Kelley Compass: The Individual (1.5 cr.)
T134- KLLC Community Development (1 cr.)
one more course....maybe PHIL P-250- Intro to Symbolic Logic

What are these courses like and how difficult will this schedule be? Will I be able to do well in such classes? Any comments or suggestions on this schedule will be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions of a different schedule will also gladly be taken.

Discounting the bottom course which is variable at the moment, this totals up to about 12.5 credits which is definitely not enough for me personally. Because I want to get into the 15/16 credits range, can someone recommend a good general education course. I am greatly interested in politics as well as economics (social studies in general) so such a recommendation would greatly be interested.

I do not mean to brag by this post and simply want those who are kind enough to respond to understand me as a student so that the best possible advice can be given.

Thank you in advance

K201 is dreaded by many but if you are somewhat computer savvy, you should be ok. A lot is covered in the class and it is fast paced so make sure you refresh whenever you can and glance at the readings ahead of time so you know what to expect in class. Don’t miss any of the classes. Very very easy to fall behind. Do all the extra credit you can and review all the skill checks.

C104 isn’t too bad. A big time commitment but that’s about it. Get comfortable with public speaking.

M118 I consider myself to be good at math but Finite was a real killer (for me at least). I only got 2 Bs my first year at IU and one of them was in Finite. Practice all you can and do as many practice tests as you can. The class has a departmental midterm and final. 1st and 3rd tests are usually written by your professor. Finite was hard for me because it’s nearly impossible to backtrack and check if your answer is correct like in calculus. You basically have to work the problems through and pray they’re right. Finite math deals mostly with probability as well.

A 100 is another fast paced class. Very easy to fall behind. There is a lot of readings too. There are 2 tests, Midterm which is 45% of your grade and the Final which is also 45% of your grade. Attendance is worth 10%. This class is nice in that the practice exams are almost identical to the real exams so with that being said, make you master those. Your going to have to know the material 110%, a lot of the questions require you to work from the end or middle.

T175 will introduce you to networking and the “real world”. There use to be a lot of work in this class but I think they cut it down drastically. Do the work and you’ll be fine.

I think as long as you are very good with time management, that schedule should be manageable for a bright student like yourself. C104 has a big group project at the end of the semester. Not sure about K201, but K204 also has a big group project at the end of the semester, which makes taking those two in the same semester challenging, but not impossible. I STRONGLY recommend taking A100 the first 8 weeks to get it out of the way before the big group projects start. Don’t be fooled by the fact that A100 is 1 credit hour - it requires quite a bit of time. But as long as you keep doing practice tests until you are consistently getting A’s, you can be confident you will get an A in that class. T175 should be an easy A as long as you do the work, as well as the KLLC class. C104 is not an easy-graded class, so don’t be surprised by an A- or B+ even if you think you are doing well. M118 is the wildcard. As Nico52 said, even if you are very good at math in general, M118 is not an easy class. My daughter was always strong in math, with a 5 in BC calc, and she struggled to get a B+ in M118. Try to get Prof. McKinley for M118 - he’s the best! Have you filled your World Languages & Culture requirements? If not, you may want to take one of those as your “extra” class, especially if you are continuing a language from high school. My daughter took POLS-Y 100 (American Political Controversies) first semester freshman year with Prof Dalecki. She enjoyed the class and said the professor was very good. I mention that since you said you are interested in politics and social studies. It was just an “extra” class, as it didn’t fill any requirements that wouldn’t already be filled by I-core prereqs.

Thanks a lot Nico52. Those reviews of those classes gives me a good idea of what to expect. stbemtpynest, thanks for the suggestions and tips. I will definitely look into POLS-Y 100. I was also lucky enough to get a 5 on the Calc BC exam so what you both have said makes me a little nervous. Your advice will definitely be heeded with M118. Do either one of you have any advice with M118 outside of practice (practice is really the only solution with math, I know)?
