Kelley Non-direct admissions

So I just got accepted to IU for fall 2018, but not Kelley direct or petition. How hard is it to get into Kelley after first year? Do most people get into after 1 or 2 years? Which classes should I take in freshman year to pass the requirements? And how should the schedule look like?

@chautrinh, Standard Admission to Kelley after one year at IU → https://kelley.iu.edu/programs/undergrad/admissions/current-iu.cshtml

scroll down.
30 credit hours completion with min 3.5 GPA with A’s and B’s. No B- or lower grade. No W grade.

Make no mistake: these are VERY hard requirements, likely to weed out 50-70% students. Finite math alone where about half the students make a B- or less would make Kelley impossible.
In short: congratulations on your admission, but if you’re truly interested in a business major make sure you have other choices.
Where else have you applied?

Yeah. That’s the problem. One bad semester and you’re a SPEA major. It all depends on you and your readiness that first semester. If you can get thru that, your chances go way up. Good luck.

I would say prepare for couple of hard courses during summer; go through the same textbooks IU follows; possibly take help from online sources and/or community college.

I’m currently a freshman at the business school, and it’s definitely feasible to get in if you’re not a DA. A 3.5 is no cake-walk, but if you’re relatively good at math and willing to work really hard Freshman year (especially on finite and accounting) you should be ok. Good luck and God bless!

If I apply to Kelley now and meet all the criteria do I still have to petition

@Physmd I believe you do because you are applying after the November 1 deadline. You can confirm on the kelley website.

I don’t know if anyone is still paying attention to this thread, but I just stumbled upon it and it seems to answer many of the questions I have surrounding Kelley while bringing up new ones. For instance, if these requirements are met is there a very likely or direct admission to the business school or are you still taking a heavy chance. This concerns me because I’m very capable of earning high grades most of the time without a lot of effort and believe that if the classes are really as hard as what is being said I can buckle down and get the job done. The problem lies in my test scores which I worry may not be up to par with the average 31 that is touted by the average undergraduate (I haven’t taken any yet but based on pre-tests I think I will likely fall short by 2-3 points). Would I have to worry about this or would I have a reasonable shot at getting admitted 2nd year if I can get the coursework done with the GPA necessary.

@GoCubsGo719 Although I am not positive, I assume you are Junior in HS, possibly. I would apply EA and make sure you meet the requirements. You should consider an ACT prep course to get your ACT up. IU superscores and you should take advantage of that. My S was offered DA into Kelley and received a merit scholarship. After he took his final ACT, his composite score remained the same but his superscore went up and IU sent an adjusted merit scholarship offering him more. I would definitely apply to multiple level schools and look hard at your direct admits. Classes in college are much different than in HS. I would opt for a school where you are a direct admit into a business school rather than having to meet requirements and apply later. There are many great schools out there and you should not get your heart set on only one.

Hey, so I applied RD to Kelley, and I have pretty solid grades and scores (4.6 w, 3.7 u, 1410 SAT) but I don’t know if I will 100% get in because Kelley is pretty competitive. Does anyone know whether or not I (or anyone) would still be accepted into Indiana but not Kelley?

@jcreichert1 Your stats are good enough for direct admit into Kelley, but appears like you applied after the 11/1 priority deadline. I would call Kelley asap and let them know of your situation. They may let you petition.
