I have a 32 ACT Composite. 36 Math, 33 English, 31 Reading, 32 Science. 33 Superscored. However, my weighted GPA is a 3.47. Should I petition to get into Kelley now? Or should I wait until end of January when my semester grades are in and my GPA is more like a 3.67.

Personally, I’d wait because a 3.67 is more along the lines of DA standards (3.7). Just take the remaining time to make sure the other aspects of your application are reviewed and top notch. You could always email someone from Kelley admissions to get their opinion.

I definitely recommend waiting.

ok thanks
but wouldn’t I be at a disadvantage if I apply at the end of january?
Also, could I send in my app earlier and then send in my second semester grades later?

From looking at past threads on petitioning, a 32 and a gpa of over 3 seems to be enough every year. As far as waiting, I think eventually Kelley might reach a point where there are so many direct admits that petitioning may eventually become harder at the end of an admissions cycle, because there will be so few spots left for people to get into Kelley by regular admissions. I don’t think Kelley ever reached that point in past years, but the school gets more and more popular each year. They probably have at least 900 direct admits every year now, and that number always grows. Five years ago they probably had about 400. So that would be my argument for not waiting and just petitioning now.

Kelley wants that high ACT score to bring up their standardized test score for the whole university, which was last in the Big Ten about five years ago, but has moved up probably three or four places, probably because Kelley is more and more popular. Kelley doesn’t like to turn away 30+ ACT students that are trying to get into Kelley. 3.7+ gpa’s aren’t a big deal, because of grade inflation. But a 32 ACT is the real deal, and Kelley wants that, because that number goes right into overall standardized test scores for IU, and the standardized test scores for Kelley. The Kelley standardized test scores have gone up extremely impressively the last five years, and that has to help their national rankings. In 2006-07 the mean score converted to SAT was 1222; in 2010-11 the mean was 1300.

Direct admits were 41% in 2006-07. They were 60% in 2010-11.
