Kelley Question - Financial Accounting

Nephew is applying to IU in the fall, and he's got the stats for direct admission to Kelley. He's got time in his senior year schedule and is thinking of taking a couple courses at community college. He's planning to be an accounting major and he'll need 150 credits for CPA, so he's trying to build up some credits through AP and the CC. Does it make sense for him to take Financial Accounting there or is there some great benefit to taking it at IU? Will it help him with A-100?

As long as the credit will transfer to IU it would probably be very beneficial. I took A201 at a community college in a class of 9 people and really enjoyed it. It thoroughly prepared me for Intermediate I & II.

Beth’s mom, if your son is going to be an accounting major at the Kelley School.

I would highly recommend him taking the accounting courses at the Kelley School and instead let your son take the required liberal arts classes at a CC.

Here is why… as an accounting major, I would assume your son’s goal is to work for the Big 4 after he graduates. If he takes accounting courses at a CC he won’t be able to develop relationships/networks with his accounting professors who can help him down the road when recruiting season comes during his junior year.

Accounting professors can be extremely helpful when tehre are so many qualified candidates gunning for the few BIG 4 internship slots.

You son might technically be saving a few hunderd dollars by taking accounting courses at CC instead of taking it a the Kelley School but there is a reason why the Kelley School is a top tier undergrad b school. IU’s accounting department is ranked in the top 10 for a reason… and if your son is an accounting major I don’t believe he would be fully utilizing the benefits of Kelley’s reputable accounting program.

Hope this helps.

I took Finite Math (business math), Micro Econ, and Business Law at community college during the summer.

I would take the accounting at IU. A100 is an 8 week intro course. That gives a brief overview. I would recommend taking Finite, Statistics, Macro/Micro economics at the community college. This will allow him to have some room in his schedule for an interest course. Too many business courses makes for a crazy semester.

I’ve heard that students have to take their Accounting at IUB now.

OP:
Taking any accounting class prior to taking A100 is a GREAT idea. See countless posts made over the years here.

A100 is a needless 8 week exercise in hazing freshmen at Kelley that I (and many others) would like to see eliminated. Coming into it already knowing the basics will greatly reduce the stress on your nephew…

Kelley requires all 300/400 level and the last 30CR of courses to be taken at IUB.

Intro accounting classes are still accepted as transfer credits as of my kid’s last advising appointment at Kelley 10 days ago. Hopefully he got the right info since he plans on taking one over the summer. I can find no requirement in the Academic Bulletin for Kelley or the Accounting major that all accounting be taken at IUB, only that the Accounting department requires classes to be taken in a certain order. If someone knows better, I would appreciate knowing the reference before the summer!

While I agree that one should take advantage of the great program at Kelley, the intro accounting classes at IUB are unlikely to offer instruction substantially better than you would find anywhere else. On the contrary, for an intro course, I would much rather take a 30-person class at a community college taught by a professor you can talk to after class over a 150-person IU lecture hall course where there’s a line down the hall during limited office hours.

I doubt that taking intro accounting at a good CC will place you at any disadvantage in the Kelley program. Let’s face it, the info in A100, 201 and 202 is pretty basic stuff that’s taught the same everywhere since very little has changed in accounting at that level in 50 years. Same for M118, M119, Econ 201/2, Eng131, etc. That’s why those courses are accepted for transfer credit.

On the other hand, if you love accounting and want to take the honors sections of these classes, then take them at IUB and spend time in office hours getting to know the professors you may or may not see again in upper-level classes.
