I'm a prospective junior looking at Indiana to hopefully be in the school of Kelley. I was going to apply under a less popular major to Indiana next year in order to ensure my admission, however I hear it is nearly impossible to switch into Kelley once at IU. If IU is not a sure bet applying as a business major, should I apply as a different major and switch into Kelley after my freshman year, OR apply as a business major and risk my admission? Basically, how hard is it to get into Kelley if you did not apply as a business major as a senior in HS?

When applying to Kelley as a high school senior the acceptance decision is a two-step process. You complete the IU application and select Business as your intended major. IU will review your application and make an acceptance decision for the University. Once you’re accepted to IU, Kelley will then review your application. If you meet the GPA and test score (ACT/SAT) requirement you will be notified by Kelley if you’ve been accepted into the business school. Two years ago the minimum GPA was 3.7 (W or UW) and a 29 ACT (not sure what the SAT cut off was) but they may have changed so check the Kelley page for prospective students for the latest requirements.

Here is what is posted on the Kelley site:
<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley;

For fall 2014 admission, you will automatically be offered direct admission to the Bloomington Kelley School of Business if you have:
Been admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated business as your intended major. See above.
Earned a composite ACT score of 30 or SAT total score of 1270, including only the math and critical reading sections. The best available scores from multiple test dates will be considered.
Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale during your high school career. Indiana University accepts weighted GPAs (if provided on the high school transcript). Please note that all GPAs will be converted to a 4.0 scale.

@WistfullThinking So, if I’m not a shoe in candidate as a senior for Kelley, would it be easier apply as something else and then switch in once at IU?

What wistfulthinking was explaining to you was that what major you apply under is not relevant for IU admissions. Every applicant is first admitted to the university, and some students are then directly admitted to their college or school. The vast majority of freshman are in what is called the University Division. University Division students apply to the college or school of their choice after they complete the requirements (usually 25/26 specified credit hours). While a University Division student, it’s easy to change your major. The major you list on your application is irrelevant UNLESS you think you have the stats to be a direct admit. It’s been a few years since I’ve looked at an application, but I think it’s possible to apply as undecided.

Apply as business. It won’t impact your admission decision to IU. If you don’t have the stats for automatic admission to Kelley, you can petition.

Awesome! Thanks so much!

curtiss, based on the stats you listed in another thread (3.92/5 uwt gpa and 2150 SAT, 32 ACT), you are a pretty-much a lock to be accepted into big schools with good business programs that you are considering such as Indiana University and Miami/Ohio. You say your counselor at hs is telling you to apply for “easy” majors or less-popular major in order to guarantee acceptance to the larger university. That is a very bad idea for applying to large universities that have big freshman classes, including Indiana U, as you will be accepted anyway to just about any large public school (with “public ivies” or whatever being more difficult, but IU and Miami are not in that class of schools) with your SAT/ACTs. Your standardized test scores are easily in the top five percent in the country, and that makes you very attractive at a school like IU and to Kelley also. So, be sure to apply on your IU application as a business major. You won’t get accepted to Kelley unless you petition, which you should do soon after getting your IUB acceptance. Apply as early as possible. You can probably apply to IU in August. I read on this message board over and over of students with high standardized test scores getting in through petitioning. Having students with high standardized test scores helps IU and Kelley’s prestige, and your’s are very high.

Also, talk to your hs counselor about how they report your gpa. Only send one gpa-- the highest one (weighted). Do everything you can to get your weighted gpa on your application.

Not quite sure about the validity of the rumor but a lot of my direct admit friends this year (just finished freshman year) said that they were told the high school class of 2014 was going to be the last class in which direct admission was offered. Apparently over the years direct admits have had a lower GPA than standard admits after freshman year and with Kelley wanting to up their ranking it would make since to make the switch to matchup with the likes of Virginia, MIT, Michigan, etc.

That rumor has been going on for years. I’ll believe it when I see it. They haven’t even raised the requirements to be a direct admit in at least 4 years.

Therefore, with a 30 act and 3.7 gpa, there is no possible way for me to be rejected from Indiana University or Kelley?

Yes, with those stats based you will be admitted.

@WistfullThinking Either way, I’ll be admitted to Indiana? Kelley or not? And if I don’t get in directly to Kelley, I can try again once at Indiana?

@curtiss Yes. With your stats you should be admitted to Indiana. If you don’t get directly admitted to Kelley you have the option to petition for direct admission (successful petitions typically are the result of the candidate exceeding one requirement and being very close on the other). The other option is to apply to Kelley spring of your freshman year.
