Alright so I just got into Indiana University at Bloomington as a transfer student. I will be attending in the fall as, technically a sophomore because I took the past fall semester off. Here is my question. At one of my old schools (Fordham) I received a W in one class because it was Mandarin Chinese and was too hard for me to deal with (had to go to a different campus for the class so it was a half hour commute each way). Then at my new school I have two Ws (Stony Brook University). One was for a summer class I took that I had to withdraw from due to medical reasons. The other one was because I signed up for 6 classes this semester but didn't realize how difficult it would be so I withdrew from one to have a more controllable work load. On the IU website it states that you need atleast Bs in every class to get admission. I have Bs or above in all the classes I have taken to date at both schools I have attended. If I get A-'s/B+'s/Bs at IU in my first semester and with the 3 Ws, do you think its a guaranteed admission? I don't want to go to IU to only realize that I wasted a semester and now be stuck doing a major I don't want to do.

You would probably be wasting two semesters if you don’t get accepted to Kelley, because you apply after your first semester and will probably not find out if you get in until Spring semester has begun. Sounds very risky. The Kelley web page on transfer admittance states “Demonstrate commitment to course load. Students with no W’s in coursework have stronger applications.” Probably no way that three W’s would be guaranteed admission. There are more and more direct admits every year at Kelley, which means fewer slots for regular admits and transfer students.

2005-06
Direct Admits 332
Regular Admits 955
Total 1287

2010-11
Direct Admits 829
Regular Admits 553
Total 1382

Call Kelley and ask for an honest assessment of your chances. Ask them if a solid no B-'s or below fall semester will be enough to offset the 3 W’s.

I’m somehow in the same situation I have one W in my transcript from Ivy Tech, and if I don’t get in I won’t go to another major that I don’t like, I will simply apply to the Kelley School at Indianapolis and hopefully get in their, since its much easier than down here in Bloomington.
