Kelley School

Hey guys,
I was accepted into the university division for Indiana Bloomington. I was reading the website for Kelley and it said you can transfer into Kelley if you complete certain courses and get certain grades. My question is, can I transfer after first semester. The reason I ask because it says you have to apply by September 1st to be considered for the spring semester? Will I complete the necessary courses in time?

indycarkid–I don’t have a business major at IU, but I have been around CC long enough to know a couple of things regarding admissions to Kelley. If you don’t get as a direct admit while a freshman, you will typically apply after completing a number of courses and hours required for Kelley admissions. That would likely be during Spring semester. Not being admitted to Kelley will not prevent you from taking the business courses you will need though. The overwhelming majority of IU students begin in the University Division and then go into their school/college and major. I won’t pretend to know everything about Kelley admission and would recommend you use the search function above to find the many threads related to Kelley admission. Try the terms direct admit, Kelley admission, etc. You might also search for posts by calcruzer, maxellis, and bthomp as they know a lot about admission to Kelley.

I was a direct admit into Kelley just a few days ago with these numbers:

Weighted GPA: 3.51
SAT: 1990 (710 W, 650 R, 630 M)

CaliDreamer, were you in the top 10% of your class?

No, my school does not rank so I have no idea

I’m petitioning hoping to get in with a 3.6 GPA and a 29 ACT

CalDreamer did you petition in order to get a direct admit

^^Nope I just applied to Kelley School of Business in early December and then got a congratulations email a few days ago.

My D is not applying for business, so I don’t KNOW the rules. But…since no freshmen with experience have answered your question yet…My OPINION is that I read the rules as saying “No” to your question.

You have required classes to complete, and must get the required grades in those classes. So, I think you’re asking if you can begin as a freshman in the Fall of 2010, and immediately apply on Sep 1 for Spring admittance to Kelly. Then you’d sign up for the required classes (hope you get them), and then…if you get the grades by the end of the semester, you would be admitted to Kelly in semester II. I THINK that’s not possible, but I didn’t sit down and count the classes. The same website info specifically says that MOST freshmen apply in their Spring semester, for admission for Fall as a sophomore. For something even more definitive…probably you need to check with Kelly directly.

I agree with above poster. Check with Kelley directly…the requirments have gotten higher every year.

The Kelley School of business has become a very “HOT” school to get into across the US…as that happens it gets harder to get into.

Indycarkid, from the Kelley website:

“Applications for admission are accepted in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Most students apply during the second semester (Spring) of their freshmen year and receive notification about their admission in late June. Admission decisions are made only after official grades are posted at the end of the application semester.”

You apply during the spring semester, and receive the decision the summer after the spring semester is over and its grades are posted. You will need to have completed (or have in progress) at least 26 credits.:

* Completion of 26–70 hours of college coursework. (For transfer students, this includes completion of at least one semester on the Bloomington campus.)

  • Consistent “B” performance across all courses. Please note that a B– does not meet this requirement. The Admissions Committee reviews grades in all courses, not just business courses.
  • Completion of ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition (or equivalent).
  • Completion of three or more of the following admissions courses:
    o MATH-M 118 Finite Mathematics
    o MATH-M 119 Brief Survey of Calculus
    o BUS-K 201 The Computer in Business
o BUS-X 100 Introduction to Business Administration OR BUS-G 100 Business in the Information Age
  • Demonstrate commitment to course load. Students with no W’s in coursework have stronger applications.

You need at least a solid B in the classes listed above. You can take either M118 or M119 or both of them when you apply; I would only take one of them, however, as these are tough grading classes at IU. I would take M119, as it is a little easier than finite math; then take finite at a cc during the summer or during your sophomore year at IUB.

I am going to clear up the confusion some people are having abouit calidreamer’s GPA.You do need a 3.7 GPA- by Indianas wieghting system, not your schools. I also had around a 3.5 GPA, but indiana weights differently, so mine became a 3.7 by their standards, i can only assume calidreamer’s situation is similar.

I don’t understand why/how Kelley is such a good business school. no offense, but IU isn’t that great of a school overall and it’s easy to get into the business school. I’ve always wondered about that for other schools too- why is it relatively easy to get into a program that is amazing?

Kelley is known for producing highly competant graduates. The curriculum makes it very easy to study abroad and double or triple major and even add minors. The i-core also teaches students to work in teams, specialize, and analyze all aspects of business. IU succesfully produces highy-quality graduate after high-quality graduate. That is why kelley is so highyl regarded.

Everyone is speaking about GRADES to OP. But the question is whether or not he/she can try again for a Kelly admit within his/her stated time period (Semester II), which means he/she has to APPLY by 9/1/10…and he/she is wondering if THAT is possible. The website quoted here is what OP has obviously been looking at, as have I. But it’s not COMPLETELY definitive. OP, check with Kelly. Let us know the answer so we can leave ya alone. Hehehehehehee. And good luck.

Mvlc2010, I suprised that you asked about the kelly school of business. If you research the rankings you will find it ranking very high. Also, they are now only direct admitting students with 3.7 and 29 ACT scores. This means a highly motivated incoming class.

It will be interesting in the next few years what happens to this ranking, because one of the criteria was facilities. Indiana is one of the top ranked stunning campus in the US. The business business needs updated. They are starting a Major expansion and renovation this year. The good new is many of the classes will move to the graduate business building which is new and wonderful.

One of the many positives for my son is you get to take classes in the business program right away. This will help you to make sure this is what you want to go into. Many business programs you cannot do this.

are you following the businesswekk rankings? dont take those seriously, noody does. The usnews rankings are more thoroughly thought out. Most people look at USNEWS, which places indiana at 12th.

oh, and being in Kelley makes just about no difference, in terms of prereqs. Ive ehard stories from direct admits and ones who came in later, both ahd virtually the same experiences at Kelley.

Yes, I mean US News…I agree about Business Week rankings.

Kelley used to rank 5 in USNEWS many years back but has been steadily dropping due to facilities.
