Kelley VS Ross?

Hey guys,
So i just got admitted into IU and if i do accept, i will be starting this fall. (yes, i applied really late.) I will most probably be taking up business as my major, as it is where my interest lies, and it is why i even applied for IU in the first place. However, as i applied late, i did not have a chance to try to apply to schools such as umich ann arbor even though Ross is a better program. Both Kelley and Ross offer good programs but i think most would say that Ross is a better school in terms of academics and placement, correct me if i am wrong.
Judging from the class profile of Ross's BBA program in 2012, less than 1% are transfers! Meaning that transferring from kelley to ross is virtually impossible...therefore i have a few questions on my mind right now.
1) Is Ross really a notch above Kelley in terms of business programs?
2) Where does Kelley stand in terms of it's business program? Is it comparable to the likes of USC, Mccombs?
3) Is it advisable to enrol into a state school or CC first before transferring into a better college like Umich, or is it too risky a move to make?

Thank you, all/any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Both are very strong undergraduate business programs. I think the main difference is Ross is much more selective - harder to get into. Kelly is much bigger, so the top 25% of Kelley = Ross. And in general the Michigan brand is stronger than the Indiana brand when it comes to prestige.

Kelley will give you great opportunities, but you will want to be in the top half or above of the class. Kelley graduates are all over in corporate america, to provide connections, and many great companies recruit there. But I think Ross is more of a slam dunk when it comes to corporate/consulting/banking recruiting.

If you can’t transfer into Ross (which is a longshot as you point out) get into Kelley and work your way toward the top. It will open a lot of doors for you.

Yes, University of Michigan is better overall and its business program is elite of the public universities.

Kelly is definitely comparable to UT-Austin’s McCombs. They are very similar in ranking and everything. The big difference is that McComb’s is full of Texas residents whereas Kelly has both out of state and in-state.

Its very hard to transfer to University of Michigan as transfer no matter cc or university.

If you did not even apply to University of Michigan, I don’t see the point of discussing Ross vs Kelly.

@ XtremePower, i was just wondering in case i wanted to transfer. i’m still waiting for my answer to whether i’ll be a direct admit to kelley.

@gman11 i’m still waiting to see if i’ll be directly admitted into kelley, but if what you say about kelley is true, (it being large), how difficult would it be to get in through regular admission?

the thing is that if i decide not to major in business, although unlikely, or somehow don’t make it into the business program, i would be left with not too many options or a backup plan in IU as compared to a uni like umich or UT austin, which has reputable programs in engineeering etc.

again, thanks for the input.

^^

Kelley’s admissions are still going on?

static92, if you had the numbers at application time, you will be accepted automatically. If you don’t have the numbers, you will not be accepted to Kelley as a direct admit, as the petition period is over for entering Fall 2013 freshmen. So you shouldn’t have to guess, unless your school has a weird grading system that requires interpretation to convert to a 4-point grading scale.

[Future Freshmen: Undergraduate Program : Kelley School of Business: Indiana University](<a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley)

just ended on the 1st of april!

bthomp1, what do you mean? according to the direct admit process on the site, i should only get my result somewhere between 2 - 4 weeks? “Once you are admitted to IU, you will receive notification of your direct admission within two to four weeks.” Am i misinterpreting something here?
I take the A levels, so i don’t think it has a 4 point grading scale. i do meet the other 2 criteria though.

I just mean that if you meet the gpa and standardized test minimums and have indicated business on your application as your major that direct admittance to Kelley is guaranteed. It takes a while for the admissions office to forward your scores to Kelley after you have been admitted to the university and for Kelley to process you into the business school, but there should be no question about getting in if you meet the gpa and standardized test minimums. If you have the numbers, you can count on being accepted.

–just ended on the 1st of april!–
That is the day that petitions for direct admission to Kelley end. But you don’t need to petition if you have the numbers.

It would not hurt to send them an email through the link inquiring about whether you have been accepted. The semester will be over in a few weeks, so it would be good for you to get a decision before everything winds down in the summer. You might tell them in the email that you are concerned about getting your enrollment deposit in by May 1, when it is due, and want to make sure that you are a direct admit to Kelley before you are willing to send the enrollment deposit.

alright will do just that, thanks bthomp1

well i just got a mail from kelley and i’ve been admitted directly!

That was fast! Congrats!

hmm yes. but will kelley open doors for me even as an intl student in the US?

Seriously ? You got into Kelly and you are wondering how good it is ? Thats like getting into Cornell for engineering and wondering how good it is…I know Cornell isn’t the best but its up there with CMU. So, don’t worry, graduating from a prestigious business school like Kelly won’t hold you back from anything.

thanks, but i understand kelley or IU is not an instant recognition school like wharton or harvard…at least not for now. therefore i would have to ask as i’ve seen others saying that Kelley isn’t quite as good as schools like Ross.

Go to Kelley. It is fine. It is a very good school. However, a friend at the Kelley School told me that only 20-30% of international students manage to get jobs. You’ll be fine though if you are up to the task. You just need to be proactive.

hmm 20-30% is still quite a high amount of actually, thanks for the input.

It basically means that you must be proactive in networking and going to conferences and meetings.

i’ll be sure to do that if i’m able to!

is kelley considered a semi target? if i decide not to pursue IB, will the placement be as great as it is for those in the IB workshop or comparable?
