Kellogg Certificate Program

How hard is it to get into this program? Anyone have any statistics? I heard that 50 students are accepted for FE and 50 for MA but I do not know how big the applicant pool is. If I am looking for a business education but also a very good liberal arts foundation is it worth it to apply to Northwestern CAS econ and hope to get into this program?

thanks.

I don’t think its very hard at all from what I hear. But just getting the prereqs out of the way and having the required GPA for those classes is enough of a hassle to deter a lot of people.

Both programs still had some spaces left last year. So that likely means either they didn’t find enough students with the required GPA (they want to make sure they are picking the ones that can handle the pace and materials) or enough people applying. In other words, if you get the required GPA (whatever they tell you), you should be in.

What kind of GPA are they looking for?

Minimum is a 3.0 GPA average I believe, but if the number of applicants rise above the spot limit, then you can bet the cutoff will be higher.

3.0 GPA average is quite low and the prerequisites are certainly do-able especially for Econ or MMSS majors. Are you sure they don’t have higher GPA or other requirements?

3.0 I believe is the bare minimum grade I believe you need to attain in your prereqs in order to be even considered for the program (I think). You have to submit an application and they review each individual’s ability to handle the courseload case by case.

That being said, the prereqs are pretty extensive, going into linear algebra and 300 level statistics amongst other things. I personally know several people who were turned off from pursuing the certificate just because of the difficulty and the number of prereqs one needs to take.

sainclaire, they didn’t reach the spot limit in the past two years. What’s why I don’t think 3.0 would do it. In fact, I don’t recall it says anything about a bare minimum. But I imagine you don’t want any of the pre-reqs below a B.

My guess is they admit only those that can handle the course-load. I also speculate that they would rather under-enroll to make sure everyone is on the same page rather than letting kids that are “questionable” just to reach the spot limit (neither sections got 50 kids). The Kellogg cert courses are very intense and if you get 3.0 from the pre-reqs, chances are you are going to struggle or even fail in those 4 Kellogg courses. The pre-reqs are not easy but the Kellogg courses are even harder.

Here’s the overview for this year:

o 137 applications (up from last year)

o 81 FE

o 56 MA

the courses in the program are fairly similar to their mba counter parts, so they are actually not too bad (FE perspective). i personally found some of the pre reqs harder.

also, there are people who had a C in one of the pre reqs and still got in. it really depends on the bigger picture.

^thanks drizzl. now this really turns my thought upside-down. i am surprised how few people actually applied. given the number of applications, i guess you don’t have to have very high GPA. you just have to grind through the pre-reqs and survive; then you’ll be in good shape, especially for managerial analytics.

tell us more about the classes and keep us posted about the job placement. many people on this board are wondering about that.

^also, i thought kellogg courses are harder because of what a CC member told me about his FE class. he was in the first graduating class.
