Kelly Admission Questions

I will be a senior in high school. My GPA is 3.0 unweighted and 3.5 weighted. Most of my classes were honors and a few were APs. SAT was 1910. I played two varsity sports in high school but I don't have the talent to play D1 college in either sport. I'm out of state. I do not plan to apply for financial aid.

Do I have realistic chance for direct admission to Kelley? If I apply to Kelly and do not get in, am I automatically considered for admission to the College of Arts & Sciences? Would I be considered there on the same basis as someone who applied directly to Arts & Sciences? Am I likely to get admitted there, with my stats? (If I am not likely to get into Kelley direct, should I not bother applying there, and instead just apply to Arts & Sciences, and hope to transfer to Kelley -- or should I apply to Kelley anyway, and see what happens?)

If I am a freshman in Arts & Sciences, what do I need to do in my Freshman year in order to get into Kelley? Do I take business classes in freshman year?

And then what happens if I do not get admitted to Kelley -- do I just pick some other major in Arts and Sciences, so I can get a degree in something? Can someone who is not at Kelley still do a business minor? (I am assuming not a major)

I know these are pretty basic questions, but I want to make sure I understand the lay of the land before I apply.

Thanks.

Hi Anoddduck. Getting into Kelley is all about your stats…right now it is 1270 SAT (writing is not included) and 3.7 GPA. If you don’t meet this criteria you would be admitted as a pre-business student. Check out the Kelley website and you will see the list of what you would need to complete to apply as a standard admit…usually students would apply at the end of their Freshman year…there are lots of posts on this site for the best courses to take if you are a standard admit. And again, a standard admit it is all about numbers…all B’s and above and you are in. If you are interested in business this is probably the best route to take. You can minor in business and not be in the Kelley School. Many students that don’t get in consider the SPEA program which is also highly rated. I don’t know that much about it, but am sure you can find more information on the website. I read that some students even like this major better. Good luck to you!

Just to add to what scrabblemomb said, this is taken directly from the Kelley Undergraduate Admissions site at <a href=“Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley”>Undergraduate | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley;
For fall 2015 admission, you will automatically be offered direct admission to the Bloomington Kelley School of Business if you have:
Been admitted to IU Bloomington and indicated business as your intended major. See above.
Earned a composite ACT score of 30 (including all four sections of exam) or SAT total score of 1270 (including only math and critical reading sections). The Kelley School of Business accepts superscores for both the ACT and SAT
Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale during your high school career. Indiana University accepts weighted GPAs (if provided on the high school transcript). Please note that all GPAs will be converted to a 4.0 scale.
You will only be offered direct admission if you have met all of these requirements. Direct admission is offered solely on these stated criteria. If you meet the criteria for direct admission any time between August 1, 2014 and July 31, 2015, you will be offered direct admission to Kelley.

So right now, unfortunately you do not meet the criteria for direct admission. If you meet one of the two criteria (GPA or ACT/SAT) and are very close to meeting the other one, you can submit a petition for direct admission, but I don’t know exactly how that process works or how many students get direct admit via petition.

This page tells you exactly what you will need to do your freshman year to prepare to apply to Kelley as a Standard Admit:

There is a TON of good advice in the Indiana University thread here on College Confidential about WHICH classes to take to fulfill the standard admit requirements (and which to avoid). Please do take the time to read those if you consider going that route.

You can minor in business at IU without being in Kelley. This page has more info:

Good luck to you!

AnOddDuck, You might have a great chance at Kelley at IUPUI. But need a 3.5 or an ACT of 29 because your SAT is not high enough. These levels are being raised as of next year. The Dohrmer school at IPFW is a good Business school too. As is the Miller school at Ball State. The other IU campuses have business schools but not Kelley. Just Max out wherever you go and you will be fine. Kelley School is the best, but being great at a good school is excellent too.
