Hi there! Is there anyone here who has been in contact with the Kelly Writers House for 2021 ED?
I was wondering that too! Usually by now there is a whole chat on KWH. (Iâm a mom) Typically the letters would be out by this time in the year.
@ineffableaurora yes!! I havenât gotten any email regarding my application yet though - have you?
@doorrealthe I asked for an update and received one today - although it seems a lot less promising than the letters have seemed in past years. Iâm hoping it doesnât mean too much. Let me know if you receive anything

I just found an email from them regarding a survey in my spam :-/
This is what I understand the process to be, but Iâm just a mom. Could be wrong.
KWH talks to a lot of students. Then in the fall, they decide which ones they will actually ârecruitâ during the ED round, for those applying ED.
For many years, two different letters were sent out: the first letter stated something along the lines that they sent admissions a letter supporting you. (Those were the ârecruitedâ students.) The second letter was more of a âthank you for your interest. If admitted to Penn, we would love for you to be part of KWH.â Those students werenât actually ârecruited.â Then last year, according to what people wrote on college confidential, it seemed like only one letter was sent out simultaneously to the students ârecruitedâ and the other applicants didnât get any letter. And getting the recruited letter didnât mean you were automatically admitted since some students who got the letter didnât get accepted. The process then repeats in the regular decision round.
Iâm getting all this information from KWH college confidential posts. Just to be clear, nobody at Penn confirmed/denied this.
Not sure whether KWH recruits get likely letters from admission office, like Sports recruits. If so, the letter counts a lot, almost a surely acceptance. I know one sports recruit got the letter several weeks ago. .
@f2000sa they definitely donât. KWH helps but not enough to warrant a LL.
@desie1 That sounds like it definitely could be a possibility. Is there anyone out there who has received a letter confirming support? Maybe KWH is waiting for Penn to release their ED decision date?
My D was in touch with them this past summer and she received the application survey too. The survey mentioned that if you are contacted, you are on their list of prospective students. There are two different dates to submit the survey, depending on if you apply ED or RD.
@Mum3kids Right, but does that survey and email mean we are getting ârecruitedâ? Not sure
@doorrealthe I am not sure how it works either. D entered a writing contest awhile ago and although she did not placed, she was advised to contact Jamie-Lee Josselyn at KWH. She did and received a very nice letter in reply that KWH will review her writing when she applies and meets the admission requirements. In our case, I see KWH as more of an advocate.
I think everybody who has been in touch receives the survey. The "recruitingâ is a letter that states a firm support for your application. Not everyone gets it. So far, nobody on the Penn CC site has reported getting one - strange. Maybe they didnât release them yet? Or maybe nobody reported it.

So glad I found this thread! Iâve been in contact with the Writers House for a few months now. Back in early October I received the survey and filled it out. A week or so later I sent in a few samples of my writingâJamie-Lee Josselyn sent back saying that she would be reviewing the samples soon after the deadline. However, I still have heard nothing back.
Youâre all right, based on previous threads it looks like students previously heard back around late NovemberâŠshould we be concerned? lol. Have you guys received anything at all from the Writers House since the survey was sent out in October/you submitted writing?
Same here, but no contact yet! Iâm hoping since there are so many of us who havenât heard, this just means they havenât sent emails out yet (and not that we havenât been recruited).

Hopefully they are waiting for the ED announcement date
