Kent and Millbrook Acceptance

Hi everyone!
I just got the acceptance from Millbrook in NY and Kent in CT. What should I choose? could you help me to state the adv and disadv of each school?
Thank you very much!

And I am an international student!

Kent has an interesting pre engineer program.

Millbrook is a smaller school with solid academics and limited diversity. Kent has stronger academics, more international students (i.e. diversity) stronger athletic teams and probably a stronger reputation. They just finishing building a new dorm and have made capital improvements to their campus. But it truly depends on what you are looking for and how comfortable you feel at either school. Hopefully you can attend the accepted students revisit days to be able to make a decision. You cannot go wrong with either school so good luck!

Oh, c’mon, how could you say “no” to a school with its own ZOO??? :)

First off, don’t make an important decision based on what a few strangers say; ask both schools to put you in touch with current students/tour guides who can help answer your questions accurately.

Alleybox sounds authoritative, but gives no citation for claiming that Kent has stronger academics and a stronger reputation than Millbrook. I have always assumed that both schools were academically about equal. Another person might make an argument for Millbrook’s strength.

The schools will feel very different: Kent is larger and has a formal dress code, Millbrook is smaller and has casual dress for school. Both have similar percentages of students of color, but Kent has a much, much larger percentage of International Students. As an International yourself, you’ll want to figure out the extent to which Int’ls at each school integrate into the school as a whole, and the extent to which they speak English outside of classes. I really liked Millbrook when I visited; I liked they way the kids treated each other and it was clear that the teachers really liked their students. A friend of mine used to teach at Kent, and I’ve heard both good and bad things about that school. But again, this is all anecdotal.

Good luck in finding the school that speaks to you.

I think I might to address my “authorative” opinion that Albion mentions does not include any citations. I have three very good college friends who are college admissions counselors: 2 work at NESCAC schools and one works for an IVY league institution. I went through this process with my oldest son about 3 years and am currently going through this process with my middle son. We looked at many BS this year including Milbrook, Kent, NMH, Gunnery, Andover, Hotchkiss and Choate and they all have their pros and cons depending on what you are looking for which is why revisit days are so important if you can attend. As far as college AOs I have asked my three friends and they respect both schools but felt Kent was a little stronger academically which is not a slight against Milbrook. It really boils down to what you are looking for and how you feel at the school. As I said in the earlier post: you cannot go wrong with either school, they are both good choices.

Thank you guys very much for suggestion!

I know both schools well. I think Kent is a fine choice, but I prefer Millbrook. The college admissions results are roughly the same at both schools, but I like the emphasis at Millbrook on community service and the strong and positive spirit the students and faculty have for one another. It’s a school that sets great habits.

The campus is beautiful, horse farm country, most of the campus has been been completely rebuilt over the past ten years by a devoted alumni body so the facilities are top notch. The Head of School, Drew Casertano, is an excellent leader, well respected and much beloved. And, as someone pointed out earlier, it has a full-on, accredited Zoo, a fascinating and unique characteristic.

Thanks Parlabane.
As an international stud, I really care for the environment of school. I want a friendly one to be easily fit in.
But I also want to prepare for a good college and it seems that ranking of Millbrook is not high as Kent. So I was a little bit worried.

“Rank” is overrated. School is what you make of it. You can attend the most prestigious prep school in the country, and if you don’t take advantage of the opportunities there, you won’t be well-prepared for college. And you can attend the tiniest school that almost no one has heard of . . . and flourish!

The regional college admissions officers, by the way, are familiar with all the schools in their regions. So, if you attend Millbrook and make the most of your experience there, the admissions officers will know what you’ve accomplished. Find the school where you’ll be happiest and able to do your best work - that’s the school where you belong!

Definitely try to visit both schools.

Kent has a large, beautiful campus with a boat house, mountain views, access to hiking trails, and stables, but also feels cozy and friendly. Kent also highly values community service, has a strong sense of community, and the students all have campus jobs. It may have the only pre-engineering program of all the schools and provides summer programs in engineering and entrepreneurship led by professors from Wharton and Harvard’s Kennedy School.

I am a former staff member of Kent — and my neice attends Millbrook. Millbrook, to me, is by far the friendlier, warmer place. The headmaster is very well known and respected – in fact, there is a graduate program in Education run by a top university which sends its seminar students (who have headmaster aspirations) to Millbrook to observe their headmaster for a week. He’s a relatively young guy but has been head of the school for a long time, over 20 years. He, and all the faculty, seem to truly know each and every student at the school. That (and the zoo!) is what has impressed me the most. Opportunities abound there for doing projects and top quality, challenging work which will help you when it’s time to apply to the best colleges.

Try to visit as MOM1613 said but if that is not an option definitely try to find out information about both schools. I love going to Kent and it was the perfect fit for me. My best friend however found her perfect fit at Millbrook. It all depends on the person and how you will contribute to the school.
