kent school

I am not too sure but, I am also wondering if it is a good school in the first place…
I want to go there but so many other schools that are better…

Kent is a very good school with a very good reputation. You certainly could do a lot worse.

I got the acceptance from Kent and considering. But it sounds dangerous, doesn’t it?

Kent is a great school. I loved it when we toured and even though it seems to have a higher acceptance rate, I think you will get the same top education as at any other more selective school. I really liked the admissions counselor we met, the whole process was very personal. If you are an athlete, their hockey, lacrosse and crew are among the very best.

As a current Kent parent, I can tell you, daophuonglien, that Kent’s a wonderful school with a close, caring community of students and teachers. I’ve been impressed with how well the teachers, coaches and advisors know my son. He’s thrived at Kent, worked hard, and best of all, he loves his classes and when he graduates he’ll have as many AP courses under his belt as he would have at any other school. The campus is beautiful and I’ve met many talented, poised, interesting kids there. I’ve been on a lot of boarding school campuses – through the interview process and for sports games – and Kent is definitely one of the friendliest campuses I’ve experienced. I hope you’ll have a chance to go to re-visit day to see for yourself!

My younger brother went to Kent School some 30 years ago. Whenever I went there to pick him up for the long weekend, I felt the school was very special. I don’t know how they do it nowadays but back then, it was one of the strictest schools in New England. Students had to do chores (they called it ‘an hour’) when they were late for meals or class and when they did something against the rules. It does not mean the school is harsh. It stressed an importance of community and rules. I think it is still related to Episcopal Churches?? To me, it looked like one of this typical schools believing in hard work and tradition.

The school’s longtime symbolic figure, Mr. Richard Gowan, passed away a few years ago due to heartattack and the whole school and the alums were shocked. I heard from my younger borhter that the school is doing very well these days, better than maybe his time.

thank you i am attending kent this fall :)

We looked very carefully at this school last year. I did a lot of primary research talking to folks who really know this school. I offer these three thoughts: 1) drugs are not a problem - that’s an old issue that is in the past. 2) the school does have a large number of rich New Yorker types. They strongly shape the feel of the school. If you are a rich New Yorker, then you will probably like being there. 3) the campus is beautiful but dark and cold feeling - gothic is how I would describe it . The students seemed worn down and tired when we visited ( interview and revisit). Academics are strong and faculty are excellent. As an alternative, consider Berkshire, Loomis, Holderness, Blair.

Just to add to the above – my son, a current Kent student, is not a rich New Yorker and loves the school. The campus is not gothic – it’s red brick Georgian architecture. The newest building, Hoerle Hall, is stunning and the theater is being renovated this fall. The mountain views and being on the banks of the Housatonic River make it one of the most beautiful campuses around. The students seem friendly and happy – they say hello as they pass by. This did not happen at other campuses we visited. And there is a very strong sense of community at Kent. My advice to kids applying to boarding schools is take everything on these forums with a grain of salt – go visit schools, talk to teachers, talk to students, get a feel for yourself where you’ll fit in and be happy.

PatronNY, I wonder if I was there with your brother, class of 1985 :).

My middle daughter will be applying there for next fall. Mostly because of my alumna status, but even so without, it was and still is a great school.

All schools go through the drug rumor mill at some point I guess. We didn’t call it Coke Rosemary Hall in the mid-80s for nothing. A bunch of Choate students got busted by the airport authorities bringing drugs back. At least that is how the rumor went.

I am glad that whatever seemed to cause that rumor (of truth) has been controlled and it no longer happens to be a problem. And for the person who said the surrounding town supplied the drugs, you have been to Kent, right? Not a whole lot of Town to supply stuff.

Even 30 years later, when I was looking for a French program for my eldest daughter who is at a more local boarding school (Georgia) I reached out to one of Kent’s former french teachers, who is now (I believe) in the admissions office and he really helped me come up with a solution.

I did go to Kent when it consisted of both a girls and a separate boys campus, and I really miss that about them. But hey, you get what they give, right?

Oh and the rich ones came from Chicago and LA. Not NY. Had very few classmates from NYC and the ones from the state of NY paled in comparison to some of the students from the NY connecticut suburbs (Greenwich, etc)

I am looking forward to being up there in January and showing this place which has changed so much to my family.
