Kentucky Visit plus others

Has anyone visited UKy yet? If so, any tips you want to share. We are trying to get in on Sunday afternoon, tour Monday and then head out on Monday afternoon. We will provide an update upon our return.

Also, if anyone wants to share impressions of other visits at schools that have large NMF scholarships, feel free to comment on this thread, or maybe create another one. Whatever works best for the community.

We live about 90 miles from UK and have visited often. In many ways, the school really is the pride of the state (except for that red corner in Louisville). Lexington is not a very big city, and would be tiny if not for the school.

Most students live off campus and even freshman housing is not guaranteed, so apply early! The exception is the honors college which has a pretty nice dorm. Definitely apply for the honors college. The food service is probably below average for the schools we have visited with too heavy an emphasis on fast-food type options.

As with any large school, academic programs will vary in quality. My kids both are interested in engineering, which has a solid reputation in-state but spotty outside of Kentucky. The Pharmacy school and Veterinary programs are two that definitely stand out with beautiful facilities and strong reputations. The main library also impressed me with its appearance and efficiency.

Let me know if you have more detailed questions or want specific travel recommendations.

OK, here is our take. Due to time constraints and lack of forward planning on our part, we were only able to take the official tour and sit in on the admissions guidance. In other words, the generic presentation/tour. Day before was spent walikg around campus. Friendly vibe from students we encountered. Bottom-line it appears to be a very viable option, especially based on the generous NM package. Brand-new dorms are being built that will accomodate honors students in Fall of 13. Help available with internatioal studies if interested. Campus is “downtown”, but downton Lexington is not NYC or Chicago. A very walkable campus and close-by living when interested in off-campus housing. Greek housing on-campus as well. If you are looking for a good-offer and programs match-up with your goals I recommend a visit.

Their offer for NMF is very generous: tuition, room & board, iPad, plus $1,000 stipend per year. Also includes guaranteed admission to Honors college (and the new dorm).
