Why you think you were accepted:wrote an incredible essay. also have good cheekbones

@614077

If above is any indication of your writing ability, you will go far.

that was brilliant and the best and most interesting read I have on CC to date

Waitlisted! A lot of people from my school applied there who have better gpas, i think BUT i got the national scholastic art and writing silver medal for poetry (which would give me an extra 2500 per year) so idk why i wasn’t accepted. creative writing is my strength. interested in film/poetry. maybe cause my 9-11 gpa was 3.46 and then my 12th yr gpa was 3.77, but still, that’s a big increase. i have lots of extracurriculars and community service and people who don’t even have that got accepted from my school over me. i feel like i am too qualified to have not gotten in…then again i only got a 28 on the act and an 1820 on the sat. oh well. I got into Bard, which was my first choice anyway. lol i mean hopefully i will get enough $$$ to go.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2100 [610 CR (yikes), 750 M, 740 W]

[] Counselor Rec: As far as counselor recs go, I think mine was pretty good. Again, I didn’t see it, but my counselor and I know each other well so she probably said good things.
[] Interview: Nope
[li] Visited: no
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: mhmm
[] Intended Major: undecided
[] State (if domestic applicant): California

[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: f
[] Income Bracket: ~$200,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: rank maybe? or the arts scholar thing. also the 36/36 English/Reading ACT
[] Weaknesses: AP scores, Critical Reading score
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea haha. Not to be cocky, but I was sort of expecting to get accepted? Not that I think I’m perfect or deserving or that I had it in the bag, but my guidance counselors and college counselors all said Kenyon was a match, even a safety, for me… awkward.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
Congrats to everyone who got in!! (:

Decision: Wait-listed

Objective:[ul]

[] Job/Work Experience: Bussing tables at a chain restaurant about 12 hours a week.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at a summer day camp the summers of 2009 and 2010, and all of the proceeds of our spring musical last year that I directed and stage managed went to charity.
[] Summer Activities: See volunteer work, otherwise it wasn’t much (though I did take courses over virtual school that bled into the school year).
[] Essays: Excellent, I thought. My “Why Kenyon” was really specific and referenced a a blog written by students and sponsored by the school, which I thought would get me “extra points.”
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both were above average - one might have been really awesome, but I never read it.
[] Counselor Rec: Great - she actually knows me, so I think it was her least generic rec all year.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: I started, but didn’t get my Noncustodial stuff in on time.
[] Intended Major: Film and/or Theatre.
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[] School Type: average public high school with IB program and AP classes
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: High - dad makes 100,000+ and mom makes 90,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Course load, leadership, ACT score, essays, maybe recs?
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Not really sure. There was a strong emphasis on theater, because my CommonApp essay was about the spring musical last year and it was my top EC. Most of my honors stemmed from it.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of strong volunteer involvement, no science senior year, no real “hook,” lack of demonstrated interest I suppose.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m honestly not sure. I thought my courseload was above and beyond rigorous, my scores were on point with Kenyon’s averages, my ECs showed my devotion to what matters to me (THEATRE, when I would have definitely taken part in Kenyon’s fantastic program)… I guess not having a science and downward trend in grades (all A’s in freshmen/sophomore year, A’s and B’s starting junior year and continuing through senior year) hurt me more than I thought they would. There was also a lack of really strong volunteer experience? I really don’t know… might have been lack of demonstrated interest. I didn’t visit and didn’t talk to my admissions rep. Ugh. So would have loved the opportunity to at least consider Kenyon - it was up there on my list.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Emerson College, Northeastern U, Boston University, New College of FL, UF, and Columbia College Chicago; waiting on Scripps College, Pomona College, Wesleyan University (within the next few days hopefully?).[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who got in! Kenyon is a great school and a fantastic opportunity. Don’t know what I’m going to do about my waitlist offer… here I was thinking I was competitive for merit money and now this. Doesn’t bode well for the decisions coming from Pomona and Wesleyan. D:

@pmbeck
How is a 3.5 and an 1820 “too qualified” for Kenyon. Im not surprised you weren’t accepted

@pmbeck
How is a 3.5 and an 1820 “too qualified” for Kenyon? Im not surprised you weren’t accepted

@Syoung2m And I quote, “i feel like i am too qualified to have not gotten in…then again i only got a 28 on the act and an 1820 on the sat…” I already reflected upon the fact that my grades/standardized tests scores were low. What I did say made me “too qualified” was not only my strength in creative writing, (but my honors/awards:National Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Medal for Poetry, Semi-Finalist for National Student Poets Program, Published Spokesperson for Girls Philanthropy Group, and many other awards) I also have strong extra-curriculars and community service work. Additionally, my essays were strong, insightful, and poetic. If you want to tell me that grades and tests scores are more important than an outstanding resume which delineates my activities and accomplishments OUTSIDE of a classroom/bedroom, which I can link you), then go ahead…but I think that is a very narrow minded and outdated perspective. I show promise. My poetic and filmic creations, my artistic visions, are what make me qualified, if not overqualified for Kenyon…you know especially when the Kenyon admissions counselor is encouraging you to apply for the MVP program to learn more about their film program. Anything else you’d like to know about me, just ask :)

Saying that grades and scores are the most important thing is “outdated”? Selective colleges, including Kenyon, look at the grades and scores FIRST to see if you are a qualified applicant. Then they take that pile of applications and look at extracurriculars and other factors. Grades and scores get your app looked at, ECs and recs get you admitted.

All of your ECs sound great; they are better than mine, especially to a school like Kenyon. But when applying to SCHOOL, the most important factor is how your grades were in high SCHOOL. I am sorry you didn’t get in to Kenyon, but I am not surprised. If you think you are “overqualified” for Kenyon, I don’t believe that you understand the competitive college admissions process at all.

That is a very fair point, however, I still believe that since the college admissions process is “holistic,” I should have been accepted. You’re right, grades and test scores show how one would perform at the college level. One thing I should have also mentioned was that my school, BASIS, was ranked #6 in the nation by Newsweek/ is known for being an academically rigorous high school. I took 9 APs, and got 2 scores of 5, the rest 4s and one 3 and one 1. haha

9th grade I took 2 APs (Psych and Gov), 10th grade I took 3 APs (Euro, Eng Lang, Chem). 11th Grade I took 4 APs (US Hist, Calc AB, Eng Lit, Bio). I was taking Calculus AB class as a sophomore and Calc BC class as a junior.

So, a 3.5 GPA at my school is like a 4.8 at an average high school. PLUS, my high school GPA has increased from 3.5 to maybe a little over a 3.6 since my 12th grade grades were 3.77 cumulative.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to say that your GPA would be 4.8 at most schools, although I believe that you probably experienced some grade deflation. However, the remedy for that is to get high test schools, which a 28/1820 is not. Best of luck to you

That is very true. I didn’t really study for the sat, and it showed. I didn’t study enough for the ACT, and that also showed. However, no matter how many times I tried, I am just not good at standardized tests. You are right to say that I should have gotten higher test scores to be more competitive, and to say I would have a 4.8 is a stretch (I was being hyperbolic, not serious…although I think it is fair to say that i would have gotten a 4.0). Thanks for your help and good luck to you as well. Who are you?

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 34
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 16/667 or top 3%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): WH (4), USH (4), Lang (5)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Phys B, AP Stats, AP Lit, AP Gov, Ceramics, Forensics
[] Major Awards: National Merit Finalist
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Forensics (Extemp Captain), NHS, Key Club (Historian), Volunteered on Obama Campaign
[] Work Experience: Pizza Restaurant 3 days a week for a couple years
[] Community service: ~350 hours or so
[] Essays: Didn’t put much effort in because Kenyon was just me kinda going through the motions for an app, so maybe 5/10 or 6/10?
[] Teacher Recommendation: Very Strong
[] Counselor Rec: Very Strong
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Stats, Extracurriculars (not volume, but I had a chance to explicate in a couple places both my achievements and dedication within Extemp)
[] Weaknesses: General lack of interest (I had already been accepted by a couple schools Early Action and Kenyon was seeming less and less like where I would end up)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ^^^
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Tulane, University of Arizona; Waitlisted at Pomona
[/ul]General Comments: Kenyon seems like a really cool school, but I completely fell in love with the Tulane campus after getting accepted and getting to tour and really get an intimate feel for the school. I can’t see myself anywhere else, and I think that I ended up having that reflect in my Pomona and Kenyon applications.

Reflection
