Waitlisted. Oh well… :(

I am an International applicant and I just received my first rejection letter from Kenyon.
I had the grades (almost all A’s), great ECA’s, a winning essay but a horrible SAT grade of 1790 =.=’
Kenyon wasn’t on the top of my list of dream colleges but I guess any rejection still hurts. I got into 3 other schools so far and am waiting to hear back from the UC’s.
Good luck with your Kenyon applications everyone!

@lenocka what were your stats?

Not sure about GPA - I’m doing the IB Diploma and my predicted grades should be about 38 points, 2210 SAT (740, 680, 790). I’ve also sent SAT II English (740). My ECs are nothing that special - I’ve played the piano for a while, debate club, MUN, quite a lot of service and stuff. I also won a scholarship to study abroad, so that is kinda notable I guess… I don’t think my essays were excellent though, but I’ve only had one friend to look over it + I’ve applied for financial aid (I need almost full ride)

@diabl0, I know what you’re feeling This is the first uni to send me a decision and it’s very discouraging… congratulations on your offers though! which universities did you get into, if I may ask?

I was also waitlisted
SAT: CR - 660 M - 760 W - 710 [2130]
SAT Subject Tests: Chem: 800 Maths II: 800 Chem: 760
Grades: All A*s (highest grade - gave A-Levels)

I was actually expecting a rejection, so I am actually delighted. So where are you guys from? I am from Nepal

Why were you expecting a rejection? Your stats are amazing!

I’m an international applicant (India) and was wait-listed today… Bit disappointed and a little anxious.

My Scores are:
SAT: CR: 740, M: 740, W: 690 (8 essay)
SAT II: 800 Physics, 790 Math Level 2
GPA: School doesn’t use GPA. Ranked 1st to 3rd of a class of 70 student in high school.

I’m really surprised that so many students got wait-listed. I think the driving factor behind the decision is perhaps the fact that I require nearly 100% funding.

@mumford07 Why did you expect to be rejected? Your scores are good and considering you are from a low represented country like Nepal, that should have been a major hook in your favor!

I was also waitlisted. Ahh well.

If I may ask, how many of you requested interviews? Kenyon values interest very highly, so that may have factored into their decision.

@upapilot, I guess we’re in a similar situation then. Maybe they just can’t afford to support that many international students - Kenyon’s endowment is rather modest after all
I had a Skype interview a few weeks back, but I think I screwed up real bad

@Lenocka @mumford7 That’s 3 international students with SATs above Kenyon’s 75th Percentile, all asking for full-rides, wait-listed…

I guess Kenyon being need aware, along with the fact that they got 110% more international applicants this year, our applying for aid must have really counted against us…

@tomatosprouts I did not request an interview but I did send both of Kenyon’s Optional Essays ( ‘Why Kenyon’ and ‘Describe where you are from’).

@upapilot

I had no idea Kenyon had supplemental essays! Must have been an option for foreign nationals only?

Also, just curious, was your decision FedEx’ed?

@tomatosprouts Yes they had supplemental essays that you had to submit before Feb 1. I got my decisions by email…

International student here, and I have been accepted with a really generous scholarship. I also received my stuff yesterday.

@upapilot In my country 4 -5 people have been waitlisted, about 65-70 rejected and no one accepted because almost everybody expected a full ride.

@AmericanHopee Congrats! What are your scores and your GPA? Did you get a scholarship or ‘need-based aid’? There is a huge difference between the two. Had you separately applied for aid at all or did you just get this money on the basis of merit?

@mumford07 Are you telling me nearly 70-80 students applied from Nepal to Kenyon? Phew! I thought Nepal would be a URM country…

International student, pretty good stats, needed close to full-ride, got wait-listed. I should join the club, I guess.

International. 2380 SAT. 800, 790 Subject tests. Average ECs and grades. Needed absolutely no aid. Wanted merit aid though. Wait listed. Do you think they are protecting their yield or is that just me flattering myself? I am no top applicant after all.

@Trenchlord

I think I’ve heard of Kenyon having “Tufts Syndrome.” If you’re way over-qualified, they worry that you would be unlikely to attend and instead go to a higher ranked school you’re bound to get into. That in combination with the huge increase in applications (in part due to removing their supplement and making it more difficult to gauge which students are applying just for the heck of it) does make it sound like they’re trying to protect their yield.

It’s really unfortunate.
