Kenyon vs Grinnell

My D's perception of Grinnell was very similar to yours. I don't know how big Kenyon's endowment is but I know Grinnell's is huge, one of the largest in the country. I belive on a per student basis it may be the largest of the LAC's.

Dear SR3Mom:
I am also thinking that my D should check out Claremont McKenna since she is waitlisted there and then she would feel like she has seen enough small school choices from which to decide. I wish we had toured more campuses beforehand. That was my biggest mistake in the process. But she didn’t want to miss any school her junior year because her academics were so rigorous. Know anything about Claremont? I know they have Division III Water polo and a nice pool and that there are more men than women (which might be a plus in my D's eyes!)
Best, Mizsic

We looked east coast and midwest with S and midwest with D but no one was really interested in west coast. Told them we couldn't afford to bring them home for Thanksgiving, spring break etc.

I'd be careful looking at a school that she is waitlisted at, you can check out the stats on the waitlist thread, but most of them have pretty slim chance of getting off the list. It would stink if she fell in love with it.

My D is waitlisted at Macalester. We visited last summer and she liked it quite a bit but has never done an overnight there. I don't think they get the real feel of a school until they spend time in the dorms and going to classes. When we visited Kenyon last summer she liked it alot but liked it less after an overnight last fall. We also visited Carleton last summer, didn't think too highly of it but she loved it after an overnight. Didn't get in though, of well she wasn't sure about trimesters anyway.

I'm looking forward to having this decision done so we can move on to what computer and choosing linens. If you think it's likely that your D is going to end up at Grinnell you should probably reserve a hotel if you will be attending the parent part of the freshman orientation. They fill up very quickly. I reserved one once she was accepted. I figured I could always cancel. If she end up at Kenyon I'll book the Kenyon Inn for graduation when I send in the deposit. LOL but still probably true.

SR3Mom:
Thanks! What are the dates of parent orientation at Grinnell? I booked a room at the Country Inn for the whole gosh darn week because I wasn't sure of the dates. I might phone Claremont McKenna ands ask about their waiting list, but she could visit UCLA at the same time AND her grandparents, so all would not be lost. As a Californian, I think it might be a little prudent to have at least one California school to think about.

I think it's just the weekend. Whatever the first to days of the orientation are they have activities for the parents/family.

SRMom3:
Thanks! I changed my reservation. They aren't too specific about the parents on the yearly calendar!

Juana: How was the weekend for your D? I think mine enjoyed it. Will you be at kenyon? We are going tomorrow and Wednesday.

Mizsic, Send a personal message to Xiggi who posts here often. He is a freshman at Claremont McKenna and VERY happy there.

mizsic - sorry for the misunderstanding, she has not been at Kenyon for several months - I think she last visited in December? (we attended a "preview day" event together in October.) She is going to Grinnell this week with her dad - but at this point it looks like they are rushing back home on Friday - important water polo match. By the way at the Claremont colleges each college is too small to field it's own team, so Pomona-Pizter is one team and Claremont McKenna, Scripps & Harvey Mudd form the other team. Pomona-Pitzer won the women's D-3 in 2003. When we toured Pitzer our tour guide was from very close to us and had been on that team which was very cool. (I don't know if the other Claremont colleges field a water polo team.)

Juana:
The Grinnell water polo girls´" ambushed" my D as she was walking across campus. They evidently were on the lookout for her. She was secretly thrilled. I think she is excited that she will be able to continue to play at Grinnell. I don't know if Claremont is a good fit for my D or if they even accept folks off their waitlist. Do you know if there would be a downside to hedging her bets by staying on the waitlist at CMC? She DOES love Grinnell and is slightly apprehensive aobut going so far from home (with cold winters to boot!).

I am not familiar with the stats of the CMC waitlist. Sounds like our Ds looked at the same schools - just switch Pomona for CMC - same result. My D is waitlisted there but looking at their numbers she's getting on with her decision from among the other great schools who want her. She has a really good friend who is going to Grinnell ED and they had decided long ago not to attend the same schools - but she still wants to do a second visit to Grinnell to see how what she calls the 'oohey-gooey' feeling is -- and then make her decision.

good luck to you and your D! Who knows, perhaps she and my D will wind up being teammates in IA!

p.s. - my D - left handed driver.

It seems Denison is pretty conservative from the Ohio Five schools:
