Kenyon Writing Award

I'm applying to Kenyon this year, and I just heard about the Kenyon Writing Award. Does anyone know approximately how many students receive this award each year? And does sending in the "optional 5 pages of additional material" make a big difference in receiving the award? Thank you!

This is the first year for this award after a new gift to the College this summer. Currently the scholarship will recognize one winner each year. The optional five pages are to give students the opportunity to share more of their writing than is presented in the Common App, and may play a role in the decisions.

Hello, my daughter was accepted yesterday and received this award. It is given to one incoming freshman. She did not send in any extra writing … Just what was required. We are pretty stunned that she received this but also thrilled. Hope this helps for others that may have questions in the future.

I see that you say that your daughter received the freshman writing award at Kenyon, but passed it up to go to Ohio State. That seems a bit unusual to me, but then again I do not live in Ohio.

It probably does seem unusual. Ohio State offered her a full tuition scholarship. The difference over 4 years was that Kenyon would cost her (and us since we are helping) about $25,000 more. That is a lot of money. And a lot of debt. There were other factors as well and Kenyon was still her number 1 choice but she made a sacrifice. In her heart, I think she would rather be at Kenyon… But, that is life.

Thanks for replying. Makes total sense. Good luck to her!
