Kettering University: Reputation?

I am an international student who has been accepted to Kettering University with a full-tuition scholarship for all 4.5 years. I was wondering what the reputation of this program/college is on a national/global basis and whether it was worth doing my education there.

I also have the option of attending a more-renowned university in my own country (University of Waterloo which also has a co-op, Queen's University, University of Toronto, etc.). What would you advise, and why?

Thanks in advance.

I think Kettering is well-respected in engineering circles. I certainly know many successful grads.

It was very reliant on its historic relationship with GM. It's the only thing that would give me pause about Kettering just now. I would ask about the availability of co-ops and other programs.

I have a son in engineering, have been a college adcom and have good general knowledge of US colleges. I never heard of it before your post.

hmom5, the school's name changed to Kettering only about ten years ago. It used to be the GM Institute. Of course, you may have never heard of that either. It's pretty low on most people's radars and I only know of it because they heavily recruit students in robotics.

Very recent article in New York Times:

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/24/business/24students.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/24/business/24students.html</a></p>

For engineering, it really matters very little what name you put behind yourself (unless you want to, I don't know, design spavships or something stupid like that). Still, Kettering IS a great school. Hopefully you're a girl, though, because the male/female ratio is way lopsided.

OHKID, why would it be more beneficial to be female? (Which, yes, I am.)

The reason I question the college's reputation is because not many people have heard of it. I also plan on going into aerospace, not automotives.

In comparison to more well-known engineering colleges, where does Kettering stand?

I believe that OHKID is referring to the 83% male population at the school. Kettering is an engineering, science, math, and business school. Since many of these occupations are still heavily dominated by men, those studying the professions reflect that same imbalance.

Many people currently may not have heard of Kettering, but some of the best schools in the nation for certain majors are the same way. I am unsure of Kettering’s global reputation, although it does partner with several international schools for study abroad opportunities. Summarized on Kettering’s webpage, they are nationally known in their engineering fields and for the co-op experience by America’s Best Colleges 2009: [“America’s Best Colleges:” four national honors - News Article - Kettering University](<a href=“http://www.kettering.edu/visitors/storydetail.jsp?storynum=2793]"America’s”>http://www.kettering.edu/visitors/storydetail.jsp?storynum=2793)
