kids -- what would you want your parents to send you in a care package?

Devil Dogs are cake-like items made by Drakes with which you need to consume about a quart of milk in order to keep from choking from the dry cakiness (no frosting, just a little whipped cream in the center). It might be just a New England company. They also make Yodels and Funny Bones. If you grew up in New England, you’ve probably consumed vast quantities of these items!

ok, before we have a new Boston vs. New York war, I’d like to point out that I just googled Drakes and discovered that the company was founded in Brooklyn. So they can keep the Yanks, but keep sending the Yankee Doodles (another Drakes cake).

They are like the chocolate version of Twinkies. I actually purchased a Twinkies pan at Bed, Bath & Beyond for my kids last Christmas. It had a recipe book for all kind of homemade Twinkie and Devil Dog type cakes and a special little syring-type thing to push the filling in with.

Wow! I have never heard of any of these baked goods. It’s going to be a whole new experience in NE. I had never heard of whoopie pie either until I went for my interviews.

Get out, obama!!! Never heard of a whoopie pie??? They are my specialty. I have heard they are common in New England and in Amish communities.
What part of the country are you from, you poor baked-good deprived child?

WAY out west. No whoopie pie here! We do have cupcakes and lots of good bakeries, but they tend to be full o’ French stuff (chaussons aux pommes, croissants au chocolat, brioche, etc.)

Which are also quite delicious…

Ok, I have no Idea what ANY of those things are!

Ah, I hate living in the DEEP south.

Before you kids get too jealous, I feel obligated to point out that all of these baked goods are so packed full of hydrogenated-type ingredients that they could send them up to the spacelab and they’d last forever!

They may sound delicious, but it could be an aquired taste. Someone from Philly once told me about Little Debbie cakes and how great they were. I went to PA and tried some of their products and just about gagged. I had to consume a half a box of Ring Dings to get over it! (Ring Ding: hockey puck shaped chocolate cake-like substance filled with overly sweet whipped cream and dipped in dark chocolate.)

Dazzlezzz-don’t you have pralines?

My office is right near Crumbs bakery, and they have the BEST cupcakes. Unfortunately, they only ship one kind. But, perhaps if you are nice to this Brooklyn Yankees fan, I can do some personal shipping for you. :)

[Welcome to Crumbs](http://www.crumbsbakeshop.com/)

Not the homemade ones, though. I use only real butter, King Arthur flour, and never, ever, ever artificial ingredients or preservatives. I have not, however, found a way to remove fat or carbs.

mmmmmmmmmmm pralines
Yep we’ve got 'em by the wagonload!

BrooklynGuy…Those cupcakes look amazing. It makes me want to experiment and try making some of the flavors; the pistachio is particularly interesting. Living in NY certainly is expensive…three bucks for a cupcake!

BrooklynGuy–A Yankees fan offering to ship cupcakes to a Red Sox fan…Now that’s something! We could use some of this on the Deerfield letter thread!

…then again, would I need a “taster” to ensure safety? :)

When I went to Savannah over winter break, I tried pralines for the first time and…wow, they are a billion times better than any cupcake I’ve ever tried.
Yum.
So basically, that’s all I would want in my care package!

Those cupcakes are to die for! I bet they’re loaded with hundreds of calories.

mmmmmm…pralines from Savannah are to die for!!! as well as the fudge…

Yankees rule!
and so do paralines!

Zoe, you JUST had your 1st one?
I think I had pralies before cupcakes, and cookies, and cake.

keylyme: they are expensive cupcakes, but worth it for a special treat every once in a while. I may just have to get one this week, to celebrate acceptances/visit days. But, whenever I see your name, I could go for a slice of Key Lime Pie.

Baseballmom: Have no fear…I get along well with many Red Sox fans. My partner is from Rhode Island, and all of his family roots for the Sox. He, of course, roots for the Yankees, so we get along especially well  And yes, perhaps cupcakes on the Deerfield thread would be a good idea. (Some people might only eat the cupcakes if they approved of the baker’s entire personal background, however.) This thread has diverted attention from that one, that is for sure. Food is the great equalizer, I guess.
