kids with crazy ECs and BA/MDs

so im a fairly frequent visitor ofthe med section of college confidential. and i try to scope out other people to get a good profile of the average multiple degree applicant. and one tihng i have noticed is that they are insane. for example a typical snapshot will go something like this

2100+ SAT(understandable)
3.8-4.0 GPA (very understandable)
Prez of (insert pointless club here)...(understandable)
Volunteer at Hospital (quite understandable)
etc..
i will have all these..

BUT THEN

published research articles
abstracts
research with university professors

and to make it more dpressing..they are concerned they aren't going to accepted. so im a little scared. i dont really understand what they mean when they put down "research blah blah"...how would i get into something like that? and is it important to getting into BA/MD programs? (PSU or Rice would be nice).

That is my exact question. I feel like the enviornment that i am in doesn't support stuff like that, and there isnt any reasonable avenue to go down to get into stuff like that. Even at the hospital i volunteer at the general consensus is that you are too young to know anything.

bump this because i think the two of us really deserve an answer

Okay, well I applied to a bunch of BA/MD programs and I was invited to an interview to quite a few of them

I applied:

Boston U 7 year
U of Miami 7 year
Rice/Baylor
George Washington U 7 year
Saint Louis Univ
UIC GPPA
Brown PLME

It all depends on the program you apply to. Some look at SAT/ACT primarily, others look at your whole image, and there are some that are head scratchers

for GPPA it seems that you HAVE to get a 33 or above to get in... it seems like the primary factor then the interview

Boston and Miami are some of the moderately difficult ones to get into... it seems like the cut off for the interview for these programs are 32-33 ACT, top 5%, and basic medical experience (volunteering and/or shadowing)... interview and beyond i don't know what they look at for the program yet

SLU is byfar the easiest to get into with its cutoff ACT at 30 and just having a decent rank/gpa

The hardest programs to get into are Northwestern's HPME (regularly reject 1550+ and 35s and top 1%), Brown's PLME, GW, Rice/Baylor
These programs seem liek crapshoots just to even get the interview.... Brown and Rice undergrads are also no easy task to get into by themselves (I got rejected rice)

GW just seems to attract so many people for so few spots that they really get nitpicky I guess ( I got rejected GW)

ALSO.... do NOT underestimate the potential of your Why doctor essay AND personal statement
.... for these BA/MD programs for your Why Doctor essay... your essay is SOLEY dependent on how you present your MEdical ECs.... that is VITAL

Two of my interviewers for these med programs were nitpicky about SPECFICS on my essays and wanted me to provide more examples and dwelve into my personality a bit more.... you have to be passionate about what yuo right otherwise the interview WILL screw you

For those curious.....My stats are (not exacts)*

close 3.8 UW gpa (4.4ish weighted) ranked in top 2-3% of LARGE competetive public high school
SATs - 770-790 Math, 720-750 CR, 640-6670 Writing
SAT IIs - 770-790 IIC, 720-770 USH, 720-740 Chem
Bunch of ECs at school (not an insane # though.. a reasonable amount), a couple leadership

My medical experience:
- Hospital Volunteering (100+ Hours)
- Shadowing ER doctor for a couple weeks
- and a mini-medical school at my local hospital

haha...that is EXACTLY ME....

except i have 1000+ hours volunteering at a hospital, worked a whole summer with a research scientist, shadowed many doctors, and did a summer medical scholars program at a university just to name the major ones.

i applied to all the medical programs coolkash applied to, and i know i'm not gonna get into any of em. hopefully i get in undergrad somewhere good!

if you have the exact same stats as him, and 10x the volunteer hours, you have a better chance of getting in than coolkash does (no offense to you kash, just that otacon said he had the exact same things as you, with some additions). your interview will be your best part however, where you can truly shine w/ all those 1000+ hours you volunteered with.

don't be pessimistic, and good luck in your endeavors.

ya... I was aslo wondering why you think that you didnt make any of them.... un less you really blew your interviews and/or essays

kash, he never said he didn't get into them.

he said

'and I know i'm not gonna get into any of em'

meaning he still doesn't know.
again otacon, be optimistic. you'll get into a program somewhere.

Evilbooya

that's why i said
"I was aslo wondering why you think that you didnt make any of them"

ah my b. didn't read correctly.

what is your opinion about USC ba/md; Is it consider the hardest, moderate hard, or easy

from nearly everyone that talks about the USC program, it is supposedly the hardest for out-of-staters to get in..... i guess CA residents get a lot of preference.

any opinions on drexel? does anyone know of any others in texas other then Rice/Baylor? yes i realized i just jumped half way across the country but I use to live up there and I have legacy.

Texas Tech has a program

jenskate1 I've just looked at Texas Tech's website and I think you may have confused the BA/MD program with the MD/MBA program. I could be wrong though, they may have both.
