Kids with high SAT/low GPA

Do people with low GPAs and high SATs have a shot at admission to top colleges, like BC or Brown? Like, someone with a 3.6-7 W and a 2200 w/ 2 4's and a 5 on AP tests, and an upward trend? (National awards as well)

Someone called it a "red flag," but some say its good so... I don't know where that leaves the issue. I'm asking because my friend had this and got into NYU, BU, UCSB and Notre Dame. (she wouldn't lie) So I'm kind of confused.

As long as you have an upward trend you should be fine.

We're also at a very competitive school; top 5 in CA and top 100 in nation. We don't rank.

I don't know, it just seems like everyone on here has above a 4.0, and anyone below that gets completely rejected by any top 40 school.

Not all the 4.0's get accepted, though. After all, the average GPA for top tier schools is usually around 3.8 or so, so for every admit with a 4.0 there is one with a 3.6.

Plus, many people go to very crappy schools where 4.0's and being ranked 1/5000 means nothing.

(The better schools don't rank. ;))

Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth (NJ) perhaps?

I don't know anything about Elizabeth High.

I can relate to Trenton Central, though. Where something like half the students pass the HSPA to graduate. Or something like that.

im a sophmore soon to be junior my freshman year stunk(really bad gpa)...This year im even doing so much f***ing better..and next year im working on doing better im taking a sat class over the summer at my local Boys and girls club...Im ready for my junior year Im taking my nice school by stormm and Im doubling my science classes and Taking 12th grade math next year to make my schedule look more competitive

According to GreatSchools, 52% passed Reading and 32% passed Math on the HSPA. It also says that TCHS has 2705 students. Elizabeth High has 5300 students, mostly Hispanic, and has similar rates.

The schools you listed aren't exactly the hardest to get in to. The same student would have a very, very difficult time getting into a school like Brown.

i'm a high SAT/ low GPA person... and it hurts, true, but it does not disqualify you at any schools, cept of course, the less than 12 percent acceptance schools... 15-20%s should be fine

Hey dudes how 'bout a significant increase in your GPA ? I mean, for instance, in the sophomore year, your GPA sucks but in grade 11 , 12 there is significant increase ? Does this really impress colleges or it actually makes no difference, esp compared with other kids in your school whose GPA is both stellar and increases every year ? :( ( I am always under the impression that with elite schools, not excellent GPA is equipvalent to being auto-rejected. They won't even look at other parts in your application :( . The prospect is horrible )
