Kinda Surprised

Hey everyone. I just got deferred last night and I must say, I am pretty surprised with their decision. When I look at who did get in, I see a lot of people who have a comparatively high amount of income and some with the same test scores.

ACT: 32
GPA: 3.80 (9 APs)
Class Rank: Top 5%
Rec Letters: Very good, 8/10 and 9/10
Extracurricular: Eagle Scout, Medal of Merit winner for saving a life, commendation from township, 150+ hours of service, President of Stock Market Club, VP of FBLA, NHS, Track and Field

These are just some of my basic stats and I was really hoping to get into Northeastern as it is now my number one. I applied to their Computer Science Cyber Security thing, I probably just needed a little bit higher on my standardized tests. Let me know if you have any insight. Thanks.

That makes no sense. I had a 3.6 GPA, 27 ACT and my rank is top 25%. And I got into their engineering program with the deans scholarship. I don’t think your test scores are the problem

@WilliamOfOrange did you visit the school?

@huskiesfan5818 Admissions is holistic, not based purely on ACT and GPA. Looking at your posting history you have some interesting EC’s.

In general, NU tries to accept only the cream of the crop EA to leave their options open in case RD has a particularly strong pool. Last year if I remember correctly, a good amount of EA deferrals were accepted, and some with scholarships. It’s not a huge deal to be deferred, and I’d say you have stats consistent or above the admitted pool.

How exactly do you know the income of the admitted students?

I’ve only been looking at some of the people here on the acceptance thread. And yea there is no way I can pay for the school at ticket price. Would definitely go if the money was right and I could get in. I did not visit the school, no, but I would have if I had gotten in. Thanks for the info guys.

I got deferred as well (although my ACT is lower than yours) but a friend of mine had almost identical stats to yours and was also surprised to be deferred. I’ve noticed Northeastern has grown in popularity over the years as Boston does, so I think they’re just trying to be cautious in case the RD pool gets really big.

Income has nothing to do with it. Northeastern is need-blind I believe. It could also be lack of demonstrated insterest, or maybe they want to see your 1st semester grades since your GPA is relatively low for them I think.

Best of luck - hang in there!

Thanks so much! What is meant to happen will happen for the both of us we must remember.
