Kinda Thought I should ask...

Well I know it might sound weird saying this since I’m Asian, but I really like the South. Being born and raised in GA and then living here in Cal I certainly miss being around ppl who are altruistic and aren’t afraid to say hi… :stuck_out_tongue: anyway, Washington and Lee University is a college I have been keeping an eye on b/c of its location, people, and its academics…I am not your average preppy girl who has tons of money though some I am kinda hesitant in seeing myself fitting in…but hopefully you guys can convince me…also if you don’t mind…could you evaluate my stats and point anything out for me? thanks in advance :)

Latin Club 4 years (founder/instructor)

I also took the National Latin Exam for Latin I and got bronze medal

Future Doctors of America 2 years (founder/co-president)
Basically, we bring guest speakers to our club meetings (neurosurgeons to pediatric cardiologists) who talk about their occupations, do volunteer work at local hospitals/Red Cross, and provide hands on experience to those interested in pursuing a medical profession.

LiNK-Liberty in North Korea 3 years (co-secretary/promotions director/public relations)
Spreading awareness upon the humanitarian crisis in North Korea and doing humanitarian activist promotions (ie: organized an all-day LiNK awareness assembly at school, protests in front of the Chinese Embassy in LA, sending petitions to various embassies and release North Korean detainees, host a benefit concert and raise $5,000 for SAFE Haven orphanages in China that are posts involved in an Underground Railroad to help NK refugees) I am a great advocate for this cause while many ppl in my church have dissapproved b/c they feel that I am simply straining the already tense relations our motherland: SKorea and NKorea and US. Nevertheless, I this issue itself is my passion and energy not only b/c of the horrendous atrocities being committed right under noses but also b/c some of my family members are in NKorea right now…and so, its not only a matter of human decency but of ultimate necessity.

Model UN 2 years (cofounder/activities director)
My involvement in LiNK led me to intiate our school’s 1st MUN chapter. (our school just opened in 2004…hence our class is the 1st graduating class for 2007!)

also I really, really don't like drinking and the fact that Greek life is big is understandable but it kinda turns me off b/c I am afraid that a bunch of drunk jocks running around frats is the main social scene...is it? please tell me no...if not... :( also is abstinence from drinking looked down upon...will I be pressured to drink?

People will tell you that the greek life is pretty open and you do not have to drink if you don't want to, but the truth still remain that the vast majority of students at W&L are involved in greek life. Thats just the way it is

you won't be pressured to drink. it's pretty much live-and-let-live there. several of my really good friends don't drink, and they're happy. there will be drinking, and if you look down on people that drink, you might not have much fun. but go in with an open mind. it's not a bunch of drunk "jocks" running around, but yes, drinking is prevalent. (but people that don't drink at the beginning of they're senior year are not always still sober by the beginning of the frosh year of college. people change...) go visit the campus, and stay with someone overnight, go to a party. that's the better way to see if it's for you or not.

thanks for your replies...unfortunately I can't visit b/c I live in Cal and my family certainly could not afford the airfare...I think I will apply and if I get accepted I will visit...but could anyone provide any feedback on my feedback?

*profile...

and W & L is no exception. The students party hard, and study hard. The Greek system is not the entire social scene, and you can certainly have a great social life without pledging. The important thing to understand is that there are no generalizations that work for W & L. You can find what you wish, even with the small student body. But the bottom line is that most W & L are serious about their academics, and they find their fun where and when they can. Given your profile, you won't be doing much partying anyway, since you are obviously a very serious student.
There are Korean students at W & L, and they are fully integrated into the general community. With your credentials, if you were smart about the process, you could probably get W & L to cover your airfare to Roanoke, VA for an overnight visit. They will do that for students they really want, and I would guess you are someone they would really want.

well i got a letter about a travel scholarship to W & L so I am definetely going to apply...moreover, what I also received something about a Heinz scholarship but I didn't get to read over it...can anyone elaborate please?

The Heinz is for minority students - it is a full scholarship provided by the ketchup company which also includes summer internships there as well as a strong chance of a job offer from them upon graduation.

so i am guessing this scholarship is extremely competitive? well...i guess that counts me out...lol

you never know, wont hurt to go for it

anyway, is there anyone who could comment on my "chances"?

solid chances.

ok...could you elaborate please?
