KLLC vs. HRC

I dunno much out either the Kelley Living Learning Community or the Honors Residential College. What are the pro/cons of each. Just looking for some more insight. :D

I’m in the same boat, i’m worried about doing either because of the stress factor. I get stressed out very easily, i’m not sure I could handle being in an atmosphere where people are constantly worrying about grades, tests, networking, and internships. I applied to the Kelley Living Learning Center, but I know almost nothing about the HRC. If somebody could give information about it, I would greatly appreciate it.

My son had a great experience with the KLLC. The KLLC tends to be quieter than McNutt in general. His floor was very quiet and offered time for him to study. He said it was nice most people going throught the same classes. They were very close and most went greek.

He was glad he lived in KLLC most were very serious about school.

I can’t speak to the KLLC, but my D lives on an Honors floor. I don’t think she feels an unusual amount of pressure. The kids that live on her floor are self-motivated and would worry about grades no matter where they lived. I’ve never picked up from her that it’s a hotbed of pressure to succeed. It’s not all studying all the time. The only thing she mentioned was some comparing of SATs at some point. That was kind of new for her. Her HS had many very smart kids, but for some reason there wasn’t a lot of competitiveness with GPA comparisons and such. Living on an honors floor has been a great experience for her thus far. Her floor mates are serious students which I think helped tremendously in transitioning from HS to college. I think they worry about grades, but they also are pretty good at getting their work completed so it’s not so stressful for them. I would recommend an honors floor, and from what I’ve read here the KLLC.

I would also add one other bit of information that was very important. The KLLC has reserved beginning business classes. This offers business classes and other freshman classes right in McNutt so not a lot of walking.

I think if you asked my D she’d say the KLLC has been a great experience. She’s met some very good friends (living in a house with 4 of them next year), benefited from being able to get help (and give help) to other students who are taking the same classes, appreciated the connection with her faculty floor adviser who happens to be the internship director, and enjoyed having special KLLC sections of core classes held in the McNutt complex. On the “cons” side she would list the required 1 credit KLLC class which she found to be of limited use the first semester but better this semester. Unlike Cheezwhiz, her floor is quite social and some students party several nights a week. That has its pros and cons. She also says the environment can be pretty competitive since most of the students are very driven academically. They are just starting the process of applying for the Kelley honors program, so the competitiveness will likely increase. But on balance, she recommends it and has signed up to be an ambassador for the program next year.
