Cinti has been shedding its rep as a commuter school…many students from all over attending the highly regarded design school and the conservatory. I agree that business may not be as highly ranked as IU…but lots of easy access internship opportunities in Cinti. It’s right in the city…if that’s a preference for an applicant versus a more traditional campus.

In addition to the well-known engineering, Purdue has an excellent statistics department.

Since your student is interested in business/marketing, keep in mind that Depauw does not have a business school, while IU is consistantly ranked nationally for business.

Not trying to highjack this thread, but I have a hs junior who might be pursuing business and I am a big fan of the midwest. I also just glanced at a top 50 ug business school list and notice several Big 10 schools (IU comes in at #16 on this one; OSU at #59). Can someone offer a comparison between those and places like University of Illinois or Michigan State, more in terms of campus/student body than academics? I have personal experience with UW (Madison rocks!), and my dad went to MSU but I’ve never actually been there.

IU and Purdue. Great choices.
Big ten. Great school spirit.
Indiana has decent winter weather.

LOL, compared to Buffalo or what? My D wants “real winter.”

I was raised in Illinois and could never go back - I’d move further south than Texas if I could.

University of Evansville and Indiana State don’t even compare to Butler, IUB, or Purdue. If you’re looking at business and aren’t from Indiana, I wouldn’t even consider those. There’s no reason to spend out of state tuition there.

The next question is, is your student looking for a small college or a large school? If the answer is small liberal arts, then Butler (or look into DePauw, Hanover, or Franklin). If it’s large, then you have IUB and Purdue. IUB has a much higher ranked business program, but Purdue is a great school as well.

Of course, as an IU alumna, I say pick IUB. Bloomington is a great town to spend four years (or seven, if you’re like me and stayed for graduate school!).

Lauren

She really hasn’t decided on a size. She just knows that the 1300 student LAC her brother attends is not for her.

Has anyone mentioned the University of Indianapolis yet? Not an academic powerhouse, but a nice, smaller (but not tiny), private school in a big city, if that’s your thing.

You might also look at that little known Catholic school in South Bend.

Saint Mary’s?

It’s very polite of you to assume D could get into Notre Dame and if she got in, that we could actually pay for it…

So it’s not Saint Mary’s?

Don’t overlook University of Evansville. It is a thriving LAC school. Small enrollment, small classes, lots of professor/student interaction. Decent Greek environment, but not necessary to join one to fit in.

Ball State is a second-tier state school. Indiana State U- even lower.

Purdue is much more selective than IU or Ball State. Ball State’s communications program is known more for its benefactor than for its program(s).

Butler is good LAC and costs probably the same as U of E.

My son is a freshman at IU in the business school. If your d has decent grades and scores she can qualify for their automatic scholarships - there are varying levels for gpas above 3.7 (weighted) and SAT above 1170: [Automatic Academic Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.scholarships.indiana.edu/pages/automatic.php)
For us this was the thing that tipped the scale in IU’s favor - not many schools giving these type of scholarships to out of state applicants. That combined with a well rated business school and a good Chinese language program made it a perfect fit.

My daughter told me about these scholarships. She’s interested in IU. We live in California. The thing is, she’ll be taking her second ACT on October 24th aiming for at least 30. She got 28 the first time. If the application deadline is November 1, will they consider her score when it comes in if it’s 30 or higher? Or does she have to use the 28?

I know it seemed like I was joking, but…

Saint Mary’s? Really nice little school. All women. Right next to Notre Dame.

What about Valparaiso?

I think it’s a bit on the small side.

If she would consider an all-girls school I would take the time to look at Saint Mary’s. Actually classes end up with some mixed guys/girls because there is some reciprocation between NDame and Saint Mary’s - activities, classes - everything.

Beautiful campus, good reputation.
