The Renaissance Scholarship is the highly selective scholarship for full-tutition. Does anyone know what kind of kids get this? I know it is the "top 1%", but does anyone know exactly what that means? Just academics? or based on diversity(race/geograpy)? Demonstrated interest?

I have this fear that Rochester has to give them to the overachiever kids that would otherwise go to ivy leagues and are only applying to Rochester as a safety.

Rochester is my top choice and I'm just wondering if these scholarships are even worth thinking about.

They are certainly worth thinking about. The kids that seem to get the scholarship are at the top of their high school class, and have significant extracurricular passions that also take a lot of time and commitment.

Demonstrated interest is important for all Rochester applicants. If you are thinking of any of their merit scholarships (Rochester is pretty generous), you must interview. The interview doesn't need to be on campus; it can be one of their "hotel" visits - that's where my d interviewed.

My son was up for this when he applied. He was at the top of his class from a public high school in WI. He is white. UR doesn't have many WI kids enrolled so that might have been part of the draw. UR was one of his top choices, not a safety for an Ivy. He ultimately was awarded a half scholarship. For a variety of reasons, he is attending a different school.
