i'm looking into applying to nyu for film, as well as other film schools. i have average grades, but not outstanding, so i'm hoping that my portfolio will make me stand out in the application process. i know for nyu, you can submit up to ten minutes of video or visual art work, writing, etc. so i was wondering, if i submit a portfolio of visual art, instead of motion picture work, will that make any difference? do they prefer to see time-based work? will a visual art portfolio hurt my chances?
thanks.

Cityskinny, I feel your pain I’am in the same situation your in. I’ am applying to tisch for acting. The advice i have gotten from people is just be creative, have entertaining stories (Just think how you might feel after reading thousands of letters.) and think outside the box. If your confident your visual arts work will catch their attention GO FOR IT!!!

Have you submitted any monologues?

I think what will make you stand out is showing you are creative and can tell a story visually. Build a portfolio that showcases those two things and do it in as strong a way as you can. They give options so you can choose what will best show your talents. I don’t think one option would be weighed more than the other.
